Apple targets Windows users

Come on Safari!

APPLE SAID yesterday that it's offering the latest release of its Safari web browser to Windows users through Apple Software Update.

The compnay is targetting Windows users in a bid to get them to switch to Fruitware.

It installs an annoying wee program called Software Update when users install its Itunes or Quicktime products.

Now it is is using the Update program to to push Safari to Windows users. Some Itunes users report that the box to sign up for Safari appears pre-ticked.

We'll give even odds that the Vole might decide to do something about that. µ

har har

They're becoming as annoying as Microsoft with their pre-installed Internet Explorer.

Should've known they were no better.

Long live Mosaic!

IE is safe... for now

Safari for Windows is, in one word, crap. It's not a theat to IE or Windows. Firefox on the other hand...

If THIS is their best attempt to get people to switch from Windows to OS/X, then Apple have failed miserably.

So called, "font smoothing", that leaves you with text you can't read, missing script functions that both IE and Firefox support, and a total refusal to conform to the Windows GUI standards, displays clearly Apple's contempt for Windows users.

Creepy

You must be alert when installing stuff, I already noticed that even when I deselect 'keep updated automatically' quicktime's installer still installs that apple updater and basically tries to not have you notice, sony-style.
I always remove such crap promptly but you need to really watch closely to even find out what nonsense most installers sneak in.
Perhaps someone should start a site/wiki called installercreep.com and list all those 'legit' trojans.

Apple is getting annoying

Having Apple Update always pester me to install iTunes is bad enough, but the last QuickTime update "helpfully" made itself the default player for every media format it can handle without asking. It really confused my mother. It is tempting to uninstall QuickTime and Apple Update and just use VLC. Safari? NFW.

if they had amorok for windows...

Im sorry Apple makes the most bloated software for windows...itunes runs three aditional processes and even when it is not opened they are running...I hate the darn software updater... It sucks big....I would never install stupid safari on my pc

I have used macs before... and before the second day of use i install firefox...faster and more intuitive and better with tabed browsing.
IE and safari "do" tabs but suck at it.

if apple wants to make waves..

they should make OSX available for normal PC boxes, develop a good driver with Nvidia, and with amd, intel, and actually create some competition , and also will force vole to bring some quality control into the game, also OSX is dirt cheap as well, you can see this happening, the question is when will the Job's Mob allow it, its already happening with hacks, I mean make it available for all PC users, cut down on the illegal d/l and hacking of it, and really stick it to vole, id probably buy it, im so fed up with vista atm, SP1 hasnt fixed the network speed, still get 10mb/sec on a 1gb connection

If only it was great

Probably wouldn't be so bad if it used Cleartype. It's actually generally better than IE, but IE wins hand down on readability and font rendering. Unfortunately for Apple, you "read" web pages. If they're engineers were talented enough to use the Cleartype rendering engine they could pull this off.

The fact that immediately upon opening it you see fuzzy fonts that changes your reaction to the Trojan behavior. Apple sucks!

This is why I don't buy Apple

I need a lot of working memory (science). I take 4Gb because there is no laptop that can use 8Gb. Accordingly, I couldn't continue using XP32. I was very tempted to by a macbook a be done with 32bit for good, but well, I just thought that is just from Devil to Beelzebub. I am so annoyed of having to install Itunes just to be able to look quick time movies (I know and use the way around, but still). Now they are doing it again. I am happy I picked Ubuntu 64bit instead.

Microsoft's Response

I really hate that Software Update thing and uninstall it from all my machines.

That said, Microsoft's response will be IE 8. I have been using the beta for about a week and I think it is a really great product - and I am a hardcore Firefox user. IE 8 is a really great product and the best thing I have seen from MS in years.

Times change!

do as I say, not as I do...

I had always thought Apple was above "forceware". Guess not.

Fire your marketing department Apple. You "should" be above lame tricks like this.
