Iphone to go x86

Moorestown is fruity

THE IPHONE IS going to go x86 in a year or two, and Moorestown is set to be the lead vehicle. A year of whispers was finally nailed down a few days ago with a comment and a slide.

First let me say that the rumour mill has been running amok since the launch of the Iphone, all based on rabid speculation. The same people who told the Inq about Apple going Intel before it happened are now saying Ix86phone. Still, multiple rumour sources are not enough, we need more evidence.

Look at the bottom corner

At CeBIT, we got the final piece of the puzzle, check out the slide here. Note the part in the red circle. Is that what it looks like?

Iphone closeup

Yup, it is what you think it is. Intel will have their usual hissy-fit when this is published, but we have source after source telling us that it will happen,so we will go with that. If you are going to buy an Iphone, wait. If you get one now, you will do what happens with any first gen Apple device, hate yourself when the real one comes out soon. Then again, if you are dumb enough to buy one in the first place, you probably will feel honoured to spend more on the new one.

If you are wondering what the Moorestown launch device is, this is a good bet, although others may trickle out before or after.

Save your pennies boys and girls, the Iphone3 is going to be pretty nice, if a bit fascistic. µ

Comments

HAHAHA

I like how one unknown device is listed as a "premium smartphone" where as Apple is just the plain vanilla smartphone.

Yeah...

...but will there be a Bootcamp option to fire up Windows Mobile? :P

Funny

It's funny to see Iphone as a "smartphone" while the near picture labled "premium smartphone". :)

What kind of "premium smartphone" is that though?

yay

fascism-core, from Apple.

yeah, right

It's a cut-and-paste image of a smartish phone that everyone recognises. That's it.

Moorestown is still too big and power hungry for such a device, and ARM isn't staying still, is far more integrated, performs well already, and is where a lot of mobile expertise is.

Maybe a Moorestown tablet like device...

Premium?

Premium Smartphone = 2nd gen Android?

You never really know in this industry.

Premium Smartphone

I think that "premium smartphone" is the prototype Intel built to preview (to be read "show off") Moorestown. No wonder it's positioned ahead of the iPhone.

Waste Of Money

You said anyone who has bought the first iPhone has wasted their money, maybe you should do some research, to see it certianly isnt a waste of money, or can you just not afford one so your trying to bash it. Im guessing the second one, jealousy.

next revision

they gotta release a smaller iPhone as well. iPhone is a PDA today - they need to release a 2.5" as well...many people thinks it is too big as it is - counting me (even though I have one).

please iPhone 3.5" 3G slim as iTouch + 2.5" for "casual users".

It's a generic image...

...it has to be; otherewise you're also saying that the discontinued Nokia N800 Internet Tablet will be replaced with a Menlow version.

The N810 is still ARM, as is the soon-to-be-released WiMAX version.

The other posters are right: this slide is a set of generic devices using stock marketing shots of existing devices for demonstration purposes. This slide doesn't corroborate what your sources are telling you.

Awe poor Dave sucker

Buncha BS

Guilty. I have been duped into reading this trashy article. The author says they need additional evidence, in addition to rumors, in order to conclude that the iPhone is going to x86, and he points to a slide! The slide has a picture of a newton in the upper right corner for Christ sakes.

I see no evidence that the iPhone is going to x86, at least with the information cited.

This article reminds me of my 7th grade book report with its' 14 pt. font, triple spaced with 1.5" margins and useless graphics. Except now, there's fancy HTML and advertising spam.

No substance at all. I give it a D-.

Smartphone = Iphone then...

...Premium smartphone = any Nokia or SE phone available on PAYG for the past couple of years?

Oh get over it.

What's the big deal with the Inqwell hate-fest on the iPhone? It's just a friggin phone. It doesn't eat babies. The service contract isn't any more horrific than what you get with any other Internet-enabled phone, at least in the US. It's not remotely the most expensive phone I've owned. My Motorola Startac cost more. My Nokia 8890 cost more. The Treo 650 that I replaced with my iPhone cost about the same.

Yes, it's limited in what it does. But what it does do is done friggin well. It doesn't crash at least weekly like my Treo did. The interface doesn't suck every form of ass known to humankind like Windows Mobile does. It does run on AT&T's crap-tastic 2G network. I wish it was faster, but I know what I was in for when I bought it. It's a long way from the end of the world.

No, it's not cheap. Yes, we know that a better one will come out sooner than we'd like. For frack's sake this is allegedly a tech related site. You'd think the blokes who write for it would know that bleeding edge stuff costs more and will be old and undesirable at a speed rivaling a plate of sushi. You'd think they might even be used to it or something. Seriously. Get over yourselves already.

Jealousy

Definitely Jealousy. Why would I want to wait for a 3rd Gen iPhone with Intel chip? It's like why would I want to waste my money on Windows 3.0 when I know if I wait another 10 years I will get Windows XP? oh..... I don't know..... Now that I think of it, it's such a waste of money buying a computer with Win 3.0...

Whom are you calling dumb?

It is you who is dumb enough to use any other phone.

Unnecessary Apple bashing

Why the Apple bashing? You discredit your organisation by being so biassed. I don't own an iPhone, but I've played with one long enough to realise it does actually live up to most of the hype.

So stop reporting on it then...

"if you are dumb enough to buy one in the first place, you probably will feel honoured to spend more on the new one."

As you evidently hate the iPhone and people who choose to use it so much, why not move on and report on something that you think is worthwhile? This isn't even news. Oh, I suppose it's an easy story, eh? Typical Inquirer.

Assumptions - Wrong

This article is based on rumors and pictures in a slide thrown together in a few minutes time using results from a Google image search. The author is making several assumptions, then reporting wishful thinking as newsworthy fact.

Why wait?

Why would anyone wait a "year or two" for a Moorestown powered iPhone? If the expectation was that the wait would be a few months, that's one thing -- but a year, no way would I wait.

Mobile phones often don't last much longer than two or three years anyway -- they get pretty beat up as they are carried around.

There will ALWAYS be another upgrade coming "soon."

The iPhone is NOT pricier in the US than other internet-capable Smartphones, based on a comparison of phone price plus 2 year service fees of iPhone, Blackberry, Treo, etc.

Having said all that, I do not have an iPhone (yet). I figure there might be an update this summer to get it onto the 3G network that AT&T is (finally) building out...and I think I can make my old Motorola last that long.

I'd love to see the iPhone on x86 architecture...but I wouldn't wait a whole year for it!
