Intel takes out the branding iron

Atom becomes new silver thorn amongst roses

INTEL HAS DONE the unusual and come up with a brand name for Silverthorne and Diamondville that does not immediately make one question the sanity of the marketeers.

Yeah, it may be shocking, but Atom = Silverthorne, Centrino Atom Centrino = Silverthorne + Intel wireless.

If you are confused about what Silverthorne is, read this.

We find ourselves mildly aroused by the choice of Atom as a CPU brand. It makes us wonder who the new marketeers are.

Intel Atom Logo

Intel Centrino Atom Centrino

Other than that not much more to say. The naming of the CPUs must have been done by the old folk, the one we know of is the Z520. This is the letter/number combo that signifies nothing (arbitrary letter) with nothing (arbitrary number) leading the reader to beat their head against the wall hoping the hurting will stop.

Still, it is a refreshing change, it looks like good silicon, and it is named something inoffensive that gets to the point.

One thing we shouldn't point out, seeing as Intel is trying to play up the small side of things: hafnium (Hf - no 'l') is a bigger atom than silicon, aluminium or copper. µ

Wow. That's a new one

Maybe after this they'll release one called the Intel Electron!

Ooh, and after that, they could start work on one called a Proton, but then get paid lots by a corporate sponsor and just call it the BBC chip...

A?TOM Come on, Give Me Break.

This is whats GOOD about making your own Wafers, having engineering staff & Robust thought to market, marketing. If only Some of VERY Expensive Card Makers would have such POWER, FOOLISHLY High prices would FALL.

Re: Wow. That's a new one

If these are the chips with which Intel is attempting to compete with ARM (why couldn't we all get along, like in the XScale days?) then I assume the irony is deliberate.

Or maybe they're not planning on really being competitive with ARM for a few more years, and they thought they'd start with the (BBC) basics.
