Microsoft pulls Vista update
That's another fine mess
AFTER AN UPDATE to Vista sent some PCs bananas, Microsoft pulled it, although it hasn't yet produced code to fix those bananas PCs.
"Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes," said Volish Vista bogger Nick White, yesterday.
White said the bananas PCs belonged to "a small number of customers in unique circumstances".
He added: "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue."
The update number 937287 is designed as a prelude to Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Unfortunately, it sent some PCs into an eternal cycle of reboots that only ceased when the plug was pulled.
Whether the balls-up will delay SP1 is unclear. You'd have to say it doesn't look good, however. µ

Saw it happen
It happened to my brother's laptop, Dell Inspiron 6400. We had to reinstall Vista and he has now applied SP1 to itVista reboots- not fun
This article caught my attention immediately, as I had a similar situation occur a few days ago. My Vista 32 bit machine rebooted 3 times, and appeared to hang as well during the process. I chose to wait it out rather than pull the plug and it finally all went through, but I was definitely worried. Sure enough in my update log, there is good 'ole KB937287 on my machine, installed 2/12.what?
microsoft? a bug? how could that be? anyone shelled out near £300 squid for all off vistrash recently?KB937287 still on Windows Update
KB937287 is still an update tagged to download by default, of type "Important", on Windows Update, as of 3:30p.m., Pacific Standard Time (the time that this comment was written).Maybe Microsoft pulled it from the prerequisites for Vista SP1, but not from Windows Update??? Or Maybe Microsoft simply is in the process of pulling it??? Or maybe Microsoft simply is considering pulling it??? Or maybe Microsoft is simply pulling a fast one???
Exaggerating as always
When it comes to Microsoft The Inquirer is always distorting the reality. I myself had the problem with that update and it does not reboot the pc just after install it does not register as being installed. After downloading the standalone installer it was just fine.Small number...
"a small number of customers in unique circumstances".Yep the 3 people who bought it and they claim they had their drinks spiked before they did it.
I know it's not safe but...
I always disable Windows Update, and never had problems with any version (XP or Vista). I know there are a lot of security breaches, but most of them are false alerts and the victims are large enterprise servers, not average Joe home user. I also know that this is a compromise: stay patched and up-to-date, but every day new vulnerabilities appear, then why bother?? It a vicious circle...They fool us, we believe and pay....AT adds: Microsoft is charging for Windows Update? Sounds like a story...
again
for the second time a serious of vista updates (this one with KB937287) has made my vista pc unbootable. last time i had to reinstall, this time I managed to fix with vista dvd. I then did a standalone install of KB937287 successfully.
