Software helps cut PC energy costs

Cuts down on CO2, too

A FIRM HAS introduced power management software for PCs which it claims can save around £40 in juice for each seat in an enterprise.

Modus Interactive said the product – Powerwise – allows centralised power management in an enterprise, giving power profiles for groups or individual PCs to the techies.

The product has been tried out at the Leumi Bank. Stephen Lang, IT and support manager at the bank, said he was surprised to find a standard PC with an LCD monitor costs over £60 a year in juice and half a tonne of carbon dioxide.

He said: “We wanted the ability to control when our desktops are switched on and off, when we scan for viruses, update software and conduct general clean ups on PCs from a central point.”

He claimed side benefits in terms of air conditioning. “If every machine is on in the bank all the time, then the air conditioning has to work much harder to keep the building cool, increasing power consumption. Also our support department doesn’t have to ask people to reboot so often because of the automated management going on over thight, this saving everyone involved a lot of time.” µ

Still waiting E.ON UK credits

With enough E.ON UK credits the Mageeks could get Powerwise and become spot on the dosh for letting INQ Central out as a spiffy tourist crib during the 2012 Olympics.

Quite an eco-friendly fit bird what with the Sanyo roof treatments. That is if Ed doesn't coo a warbler!

Which Bank??

You wanna share which bank this is with the rest of us? I have never heard of it.

Do I have to google everything to know what you are talking about? [You are a rude and ignorant reader, we usually ban your kind from the pages of the INQ. Leumi Bank is a big Israeli bank based in London. Ed.]

Ban him, please.

Please ban the ignorant twit. If he's going to be rude, no reason to let him read. Unless, of course, he clicks the ads. ;-)

Green solution: already available

There is a "green software solution" already available, which does not waste energy scanning for viruses, or need cutting-edge processors and graphics chips running at very high loads 24/7.

It is called Linux, and it is free (or nearly so, with support contracts), and highly resistant to virus attacks.

I would have thought the "free" part and the "energy efficient" part, and the "more secure" part would have caught banking (and other) customers' attention more that yet another patch to maintain to compensate for Microsoft's software inadequacies.

Readers

I was going to comment on something much like that... then I noticed Ed beat me to it.
