Apple launches MacBook Air
Thin and airy fairy
STEVE JOBS IS usually full of hot air, but this time it might be of use.
Jobs revealed the aluminum-bodied MacBook Air is 0.16 inches at its thinnest point, 0.76 inches at its thickest point and weighs just 3.0 pounds.
"When you first see MacBook Air, it's hard to believe it's a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is," said Jobs.
Oddly we fully believed it.
The MacBook Air features Intel Core 2 Duo power (1.6GHz standard, 1.8GHz optional), 2GB of memory, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, a 13.3" LED-backlit display and an 80GB, 1.8" HDD for storage.
A 64GB SSD (Solid-State Disk) is also an option on the MacBook Air.
The screen has a standard resolution of 1280 by 800, running on an Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory.
To keep its thin form-factor, the MacBook Air contains only one USB 2.0 port, a micro-DVI port and an audio-out jack, choosing to remove the usual optical drive and ethernet ports.
Other features include the usual iSight web-camera and backlit keyboard. Apple includes 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 as standard.
As rumours suggested, the new MacBook also comes with a multi-touch trackpad, allowing owners to use the same gestures that iPhone and iPod touch users have grown accustomed to. µ

Other feature
You forgot to mention the other great feature.Non user replaceable battery.
Crap air.
What happened to this laptop? http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/may2007/tc20070523_272039.htmPlus, the mac air and it's 4200rpm drive should be a real screamer. Luckily you can "Share" other people's drives, since it can't have any of it's own.
Circumventing DRM?
So, with Remote Disk on a PC does that mean I'm able to transfer any software (MS Office for Mac for example) onto multiple MacAirs?seriously...Air?
Ok, so we're gonna see another lawsuit here...this time they're not gonna be sued by any IT company, but by a company called Nike. (I'll be waiting...Nike or not)Anyways...removing an optical drive and the Ethernet port, using some crappy graphics accelerator, an unnecessary LED screen equipped priced at $1799...so, in my theory, it's just a 3lb paperweight that is just as useless as an ASUS Eee PC, except bigger...and able to kill someone with it...
Custom-Built CPU??
On Apple's site, in the specifications section, they state "MacBook Air features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor up to 1.8GHz — custom-built to fit within its compact dimensions." Are these just underclocked Memron cores? Or could they be possibly packed with the new Penryn based notebook processorsExpensive and slow
Even Apple can't make a durable "road warrior" ultra portable laptop. I bet this laptop must be threaded very carefully, else it will be broke. And even Apple can't make a decent VGA to ultra portable laptop. Why we buy laptop specially ultra portable one if we don't make it to travel?1.8" HDD?
Whoa, another triumph of style over content! 1.8" hard drives aren't known for longevity. They're designed for MP3 players where they're used for short little bursts. Under a normal server-level load they tend to die after a few days.Air
Why didnt they just call it the iAir? Another gimic from apple and the masses or going to buy it like the good sheep they are! Sad you would think that people had better things to do with their money but apparently no!!No apple for me, thanks
No matter how good or bad their products are, Apple is on my list of companies whose products I avoid at all cost. It's because of their business practices, lock-in strategies and lame marketing based on the assumption of their clients' lack of self esteem and stupidity.Connectivity
Oh my. It seems Apple gave built-in Ethernet the chop too. Wireless it is, only, secure as it may be! I wonder: can we "borrow" the wired networking from a nearby PC or Mac too? That's very smart of them. The RJ45 connector is such a pig for space, all ten by seven millimeters of it.
Flammers come out
Wow, Mac haters everywhere today. I think your just jealous of us Mac users who can actually smoothly run a decent looking desktop "Aqua" without needing a high end video card, can you say bloat-ware Aero interface. The non user replaceable battery is a good point and if true would stop me from ever buying one. I like my G4 12" Powerbook anyway.
This is a sweet laptop and as long as you are not throwing it around I am sure it is durable, especially if you pay the big bucks for the SSD. That will come down shortly and I expect the price to drop over the next year. I do hope to see and sure I will see the X3100 graphics chip to make it into the Mini-Mac, my next Mac.
Have a great day and watch out for Viruses you Windoze users.
Regulas.
Enquirer Hacks
Evidentially if you are pro Mac they scan and stop your posts on this site and ban you, hacks. The new Mac is cool and you Mac haters are just jealous.
Lawsuit?
I doubt we'll see a lawsuit here Kamina. For a start, Nike haven't got a trademark on the word "Air", nor do they appear to have one on "Nike Air".You could launch a "Kamino Vaio" without getting a visit from Sony lawyers.
Steve Jobs is safe for now.
2D Ethernet ports
Can the anonymous user who criticised Apple for not including an ethernet port please send me the link to where he get's a 2 dimensional ethernet port from that has absolutely no depth? I'm an admirer of innovative technology but haven't come across this before. And so...
It seems that the the 'PC crowd' are just as fanatically arrogant as the 'Jobs' Mob'. Grow up.Apple cooperation (Metro and Air)
To the commenter posting about the Metro notebook, I think this IS the metro notebook. Steve Jobs had Paul Otellini on stage with him to thank him from some development work on the smaller (22mm^2) chip packages which he implied was done speicifcally to apple's spec. I don't think it was at all only to apple's spec, but the communication between the two was clearly going on from about a year ago so, this _is_ the end-product (or one of them) from the Metro notebook project. As for Nike and Air. Don't you know the NikePlus thing? Another cooperative marketing project between the two companies (it allows you to track number of paces, lap times etc. on an iPod). So the two are "friendly", probably wouldn't quibble over a naming convention, the overlap might end up enhancing the two brand values in fact.
hmmm....
Basically the notebook (if we can even call it that) is perfect , yes you heard me perfect for apple noobs.... And thats about it. Apple noobs that like checking their email and "looking cool". As for the rest of the world that actually use PCs to do things useful this is the biggest waste of space.Bring on the Apple "we will defend every apple product regardless of its lack of merit" comments....
