Via to merge CPU and chipset divisions

No more Intel chipsets

IT SEEMS THAT Via is going to let its chipset division die off and be folded into the CPU division.

According to Digitimes, from now on, the only chipsets that Via makes will be for its internal CPUs and AMD's.

This isn't much of a shock to onlookers, the marketshare of Via for Intel has been dropping, and with upcoming licence problems and the impending death of the entire chipset category, there isn't much left for it to do.

Still, it is not a good thing for the entire industry. µ

Only chipsets?

I don't know if they are only killing their Intel-chipset division. Their single chip AMD chipsets, KT960 & KM960, should have launched already. Their DX10 chip, codename Destination Film, is already samling for more than a year (almost two years). Are they having problems with these products or did they just cancel the developement? They didn't release anything new for more than a year now.

Monopoly I hear?

Is it monopoly or monoploy? Because it seems like Intel is not only trying to monopolize the CPU market, but also the chipset industry as a whole, especially for its own CPUs. Via made many of the boards used by OEMs until more recently when the Core line came out. Either way, Intel always made Via pay a huge licensing fee just to compete. It's no wonder they're having a hard time.

I've feared Via's loss for years now, it's one thing to have only one high-end board, but to get rid of the low-end boards that are cost-effective to consumers? I guess the industry might have yet ANOTHER price gouging in the CPU/chipset market.

Maybe VIA has something up their sleeves?

'~~Via makes will be for its internal CPUs'

Being VIA's current CPU division isn't exactly huge in itself at the moment, and since it's going to be breaking away from Intel platforms, maybe VIA knows something we don't.

Could we be seeing a decent competitive chip in the desktop arena from VIA in the future? Since we know a huge company (Wal*mart) has been flogging desktops with their CPUs in them, that may have given VIA an incentive to bring its Cyrix derivative back onto its feet?

so dont buy from intel.

im no intel fan boy , but they only way to stop them from being a monopoly is buy not buying there products and (the important part) buying a competitors products.

Unfortunately , nobody likes to give good money for second rate kit , so everyones buying intel these days.

As soon as AMD have been swept under the carpet , Intel will pay us all back for our loyalty buy having the word innovation legally removed from the English dictionary.

CPU's will no longer be measured by there speed , but on how much faster they are than last years model.
This will be measured in the percentage of Moores law per year. This shall be know as Moores Ratio. This will confuse the hell out of everyone and nobody will notice that cpus dont get any faster , they just get moor expensive.

the good old days are over.

Chrome atomic platform shoes ware better.

Intel has the whole industry in lock-step. Since we're finally getting Chipperella to change her smelly brogans, we may as well nailhalem to the floor when the time comes.

VIA doomsday is coming

Not a surprise VIA is going under step at a time. The company had the technology but failed aggressively recruit talented techies join the firm doing R&D and innovation. As always, hire only 3 rated wannabe who work from paycheck to paycheck without a real passion in search something breakthrough. The company management work like one hell of the bureaucrat bureau also a fact to discourage young mind to join the firm.
VIA CPU tiny progresses are best examples while rivals Intel, AMD see quantum's leap ahead. All VIA chipsets technology are nothing but clone technologies and almost nothing significant breakthrough.
