Record industry beats up Yahoo in China

Can't search for torrents

THE INTERNATIONAL Federation of Phonographic Industries claims it has stopped Yahoo from searching for torrent files, at least in China.

According to AP, the body took Yahoo's China operation to court for helping online music pirates. The basis of the complaint was that Yahoo was allowing users to find pirated material.

It says a Beijing appeals court on upheld an April ruling against Yahoo China over its search engine's links to outside Web sites that carried illegally copied music.

Yahoo's China partners say they have not seen the ruling, although a company spokesman said Yahoo was hoping to reach an agreement with music companies to create a licensed download service.

The move is seen as part of the recording and movie industry's attempts to reign in the huge piracy market in China.

Yahoo was appealing a Beijing Intermediate People's Court ruling that Yahoo China facilitated the infringement of copyrights. It had to pay $27,000 in damages.

Yahoo argued that search engines should not be liable for content on outside web sites. That appeal was rejected by the Beijing Higher People's Court, the IFPI said. µ

I dont know the details of this case and this decision would more then likley be based on some other evidence as well, but that statement on its own would be very worrying for other search engines. is it googles fault that if safe search is turned off almost anything comes up with porn?

Clue it.

I don't know why search engines try to have a chinese presence, you can't make a 'free information' service in a place where they don't allow nor like such, so why try? I guess the smell of money makes certain people on this planet blind with ravenous hunger.
They should just start selling stuff they want and the morals of the home country of the company doesn't clash with (like waterboards maybe).

When will society as a whole pull it's head out of it's ass?

Certainly there can't be much oxygen left...

Worrying... maybe

It would be worrying for Google et al if it was a European or US court, however it is a Chinese court which already censors anything and everything not deemed appropriate to The Party so I wouldn't put too much stock in it. I'm surprised China even allows access to Yahoo or any other 'search engine of the capitalists', it must be some special version that only allows queries containing the word 'Mao'
