AMD bungled Barcelona launch - official

Four-core catastrophe

AMD BUNGLED the launch of its quad-core chips, chief operating officer Dirk Meyer admitted to analysts today.

Barcelona, as the Opteronic version was code-named, was hyped as the best thing since nylon stockings. In the end it was launched six months late, failed to work then, and is now adrift on high seas, apparently following its arch-competitor's Itanic on a trip to Laughing Stock Island.

“We haven’t delivered our quad core product according to plan,” wept Meyer. “We’ll make good on our promise to deliver hundreds of thousands of quad core processors," he snivelled, "but we’re disappointed.”

Not half as disappointed as customers persuaded to give the merits of " native " four-cored technology a spin, only to be kept waiting. And waiting.

"We blew it, and we're very humbled by it. And we learned from it, and we're not going to do it again," he said.

"Might as well have cobbled a couple of dual cores together," some heretics suggested. Some fanbois have even been weeping onto the INQUIRER'S new comments pages, their tears flowing like watered-down whisky.

Mind you, there's still something of the magician about Meyer: “Now is one of those times where we see things that others don’t,” he told Wall Street's finest. He must've been eating the mushroom omelette.

“We’ve done a lot of things well, " he protested. There was, "but one thing we haven’t.”

That just happened to be make some chips that work. And that just happens to be the company's core business.

"We’re hellbent on fixing our quad core," Meyer said. µ

What is this?

AMD seems like a government agency as opposed to a private sector publicly traded company. Accountability usually means deliver or get someone who can.... CLEAN HOUSE when your inept people fail to deliver your company's promise?

I just don't understand AMD/(red graphics cards)... They are just way too content with failure. They have everything they could ever need to compete with Intel except the WILL and ENERGY to make it happen.

AMD needs top-down restructuring. Starting with Ruiz and Meyer getting their pink slips.

Intel team A vs. Intel team B. is not competition.

At Least

Well, I guess I ought to give AMD some credit.

AT LEAST, this time, they managed to get through an Analyist Conference without blaming their failure on intel.....

This time.

@Dan A.

You should try doing something more involved than trying to figure out the power cord on your Gameboy.

Making real stuff is hard, making chips is much harder.

Try it some time before you spout your idiocy before the world.

Re: What is this?

No, they do not have the R&D money Intel has.

Hell, not even IBM has the amount of money in the CPU division R&D Intel has.

Simplification:
less money => less resources => harder to do the stuff => delays and inability to deal with unexpected issues

Single major error AMD did wrong in the last 2 yrs was the overhype-ing of K10, period. But, this "single error" is, kinda, HUGE...

glad they can admit that theres a problem
as long time user and amd pc builder (yes intels too) i look forward to (fixed) phenoms

What competition?

AMD has never seriously challenged Intel for total market share...

Well, unless you go off the Steam users hardware survey. In terms of OEM penetration, server market etc, AMD has been a risky bet and many organisations are content sitting pat and waiting to see what happens.

For a long time AMD gave the appearance of competing with Intel because their processors were damn good. But good doesn't mean you're making more money at the end of the day, and Intel has learned from it's netburst mistakes. AMD is going to need one hell of a rabbit coming out of that hat.

Good article

Another great, objective article from The Inquirer. Great job!

4 color toilet paper needed!

Can you imagine, pink, white ,yellow & blue all in 4 ply roll, WOW AMD What where You Thinking?

Here last minute new bios to form new mainboard around has been know since summers video of bios change, its same ole show.

Now two voltage planes, poorly defined, yet 1.1 vs. 1.35? or worse? Last step is BIG One if its to work, so last for greatest hardware useabilities to incorporate.??

Look on the bright side...

After so many technical blunders from AMD a was beginning to believe in supernatural origin of AMD.

No such "small" ( well, relatively to competition )company should be able to survive so many scre**ps.

As not-quite-satisfied customer of their Opterons (K-8 S940) which I paid dearly and got them with significant errata defects I am really delighted to see their tactics blowing up in their face at least this time.

Whether AMD makes it through this one or not, we can expect to see some nice QC chips for nice prices soon. And hopefully with much fewer annoying bugs.

Just what I need for my AM2+ board as a step-up from existing X2 6000+ and after that, who cares. Next step might well be with Intel or better yet IBM's Power series.

Latter choice might get interesting especially if AMD gets eaten by AMD, albeight Samsung shouldn't be such bad choice, either.

Housecleaning Time

I agree with Dan's comment. If you don't deliver you're GONE. Simple as that and it's got to start at the top. If you hold onto the current inepts then its just a downward spiral to oblivion and we all need AMD to survive for competition reasons.

Cmon AMD ... keep that pedal to the metal

AMD makes good products and they've done pretty well when you consider how small they are compared to Intel.

Intel has FAR more money they can throw at R&D and testing and so forth. You gotta admire a company like AMD really. They really are David taking on Goliath ... or chimpzilla taking on chipzilla like the Inquirer says.

I hope they shock the computer world in the next year or so with some huge innovations they are working on now. Something that will make their chips dominate vs. Intel chips on benchmarks for 2-3 years.

Maybe AMD has some Einsteins in the company that can make it happen. That would be a great story in the history of business.

I'd like to see AMD have a big comeback like Apple has with their iPods and IPhones. Maybe AMD needs a charismatic leader like Steve Jobs to do it. A football coach kind of guy who is good with the tech press and good at inspiring the employees to be their best, etc. Hopefully Dirk Meyer is going to be like that when he becomes CEO later on.

You gotta have that optimal combination of well engineered, innovative, high performing products, good marketing and saavy PR you know ... you need that "cool factor" and all that.

Dirk for President

AMD needs a no-bullshit straight down the line guy running the place ... Dirk is the man for the job.

Fire the entire PR department, and ensure all PR related information disclosed is cleared at the top.

Don't tell us anything more dribble about the quads until the damm thing works properly - then tell the world.

Instead of comparing the thing to Intel's last round of chips - give us industry benchmarks (honest ones).

Give it to Scott Wasson and Anand Al Shimpi to run benchmarks first .. we genrally respect them for putting the fanboi rubbish to one side.

Drop the prices again on the current lines ... keep the volume end of the market alive.

No more claims without benchies please?

Oh ... Hector ... my stock dropped to under $10 yesterday ... your fired !!!

AMD is Challenging Intel

Accordingly to INQ previous report on Intel = 30X AMD in terms. If we were to calculate the market share using those number, Amd should be only owning 1/30 of Intel marketshare but AMD managed to grab more than 10% of marketshare. If Intel is not worrying about that we are worrying for Intel then....

Denial is not just a river in Africa...

Just 'one' problem? Had AMD executed PERFECTLY on K10, they still would have lost about 2Bil this year as the volumes expected in 2007 were small (even Ruiz mentioned this early in the year before the Barcelona problems)

There are far more problems than just K10, AMD is just hoping to sell the investors and analysts on another quick fix. K10 launch will not fix the TDP issues they are facing on the 65nm process - or are they not increasing 65nm K8 clocks above 2.9GHz by choice and not migrating the 90nm 3.2's because they don't want to sell those pesky high margin parts? The 45nm process minus high K will be just as leaky and hot and no product is shipping until H2'08 which leaves them a year behind Intel, so they are not "closing the gap" as many have believed with the ridiculous "ramp in H1'08" misleading statements.

I think AMD is in for a harsh reality next year if they think all of their problems are simply due to a bungled K10 launch. The ATI division though does seem to be cleaning up it's act.

Top Management..

Top Management must be removed and replaced with people that work for a living. Failure is one thing- but this is deception of their customers, their shareholders, and their fanbase. It didn't have to go down like this. They could have been honest. But they are lying bastards. Aren't they.

The sale of 10% of their stock to a muslim country. The fact that they sold CPU's that they knew were broken. Freezing at 2.5Ghz unless you disable L3 cache is a paperweight, not a errata bug. Hector Ruiz looking more and more and more like an illegal alien needing a foot up his @ss. AMD, with such good breeding as a Chinese Communist founder, and Socialist Canuckian subsidized monkeyfest were dogcr@p before and they are now dogcr@p with a broke@ss cpu on top.

Has ATI ever, in the history of their sad pathetic useless little company, made a driver that worked for all OS's? Can anyone tell me this? Since the ATI All in Wonder was killed off, it seems that they can't get their junk to run on systems other than Winblows 2000/XP. And maybe that's for the best. I don't want to confuse them with the details of selling products that people can use.
