Abu Dhabi to buy nine per cent of AMD

Arabian Micro Devices

AMD IS TO flog off nine per cent of itself to Abu Dhabi.

The deal will cost the country around $700 million "people close to the situation" apparently told the Financial Times.

The acquisition would go through the Mubadala Development Company which is a front for the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which in the United Arab Emirates.

The deal may yet be scuppered by the American Committee on Foreign Investment in the US which may find the fact that an Arab state owns part of the largely US chip company objectionable.

AMD could do with the dosh, however. Last night, the firm said in a regulatory filing that it was considering the sale of up to $700 million in common stock in order to reduce its debt mountain which stands at something in the region of $5.3 billion.

AMD said it would prefer us not to call it Arabian Micro Devices*. µ

Oh Great

So that is when our graphics chips will start to blow up in our faces and take out more twin towers.

I wonder...

If it was the other way round like Israel buying up 9% of AMD you wouldn't dare call it Ashkenazi Micro Devices.

core 2 duo

of course all arabs have to go AMD the core 2 architecture was designed in Haifa by Israeli chip designers or the jews that saved Intel .

Arab or Arabian?

Arabian Micro Devices sounds more lovely than Arab Micro Devices.

blowing up?

JR, thats what I call great Graphics... I'm tired of all this DX10.x talk... go ahead just make the GPU do some real explosions and some real smoke...

IT was about time :-)

What...?

I say again....what...? I must be missing something. Because Abu Dhabi will own part of AMD, now we have to worry about terrorists using AMD chips to blow stuff up...is that it...? Really...? That was a joke, right...? It had to be.

You do realise that they still aren't asking for your "Terrorist Express" card, (2 jihads for the price of one), at Best Buy, right?

Uncalled for.

Wow, really showing that American racism right there.

Pat yourself on the back friend, you're part of the problem.

Terror supporters!

UAE is ground zero for terror and drug money laundering. Read the 9/11 commission report on terror financing. All the money used to finance 9/11 came through UAE, state-controlled (i.e. royal family controlled) banks. They've actively resisted reforms. Our enemies, not our friends.

$622 million invested for 8.1%.

AMD needed this in a big way. Let's hope they can take advantage of it.

Dictatorship

errh...Abu Dahbi is a non-democratic state governed by an absolute emir. Of course it's a big problem if one of their state-owned companies get to buy a piece of one of america's most sophisticated technology firms.

Note to JR

AMD needs the money full stop, if no one in America want's to buy into AMD then they better get the money from somewhere else or face going bust or be taken over by a Chinese company and move production over there, good for the Chinese jobs, their economy and my pocket too, the boys in China sure know how to mass produce all for peanuts, Grow up JR stop adding fuel to the fire by thinking the whole world is America, in 10 years time the world will be China and America will just be one of the smaller fishes unless you use your head and play smart, by the way Abu Dabi is one of the decent Arab countries and they are definately not daft, try a bit af research on the net it certainly helps a lot.

Great comments

What a great list of comments! racism at its best.
AMD needs a savior. What is better than an oil rich country that can handle any short-term (or even long-term!) loss.

Wrong Arabs

Silly, the UAE didn't blow up the twin towers, those guys were Saudis'. Oh wait, I mean to say Saddam Hussien.

In any case I'm sure I'll continue to make plenty of Improvised Electronic Devices using AMD chips.

racist technology

I agree with the poster above, and offer congratulations to all the racist/comedy comment makers. Well done guys you clearly show your own ignorance. If Israel bought 9% of the company how do you think they would feel if we called it "Jew MD"? Do you think that if you add a splash of humour (humor for the yanks) it makes it alright to be racist? Well done again and pass it on to the next generation yeah?

letter from Hector to Arab friends

Dear Mr Arab invester,
My name is Hector, I am in charge of a big company and do I have a deal for you. Lately there is this big dude up the street that has been beating me up, picking me up by my feet and all of my money falls out onto the ground. The guy who is way bigger than me keeps on doing this no matter what I do. Last night I knew he was going to be at the end of the block when I got there so I brought a big stick I knicknamed Barcelona with me. That big bad guy grabbed the stick right out of my hand and broke it over his knee. I was mortified and froze in horror when this happened and he grabbed me again and shook the change right out of my pockets. Hector, I thought to myself you have got to do better than that so I went to the bank and took out every cent I had left and bought a big aluminum bat called the ati. It was a mean looking thing with spikes sticking out of it. I didnt spend all the money though and had enough left over to buy myself some ice cream. On the way to the ice cream parlor that big guy was waiting for me again, I yelled at the guy to stay back, I had a secret weapon to destroy him if he got too close. I showed him my radeon bat and he just laughed, dropped his drawers and blew a fart in my dirction. It was a stinky one too and the ati radeon bat melted right out of my hands. I was really disapointed when the big ugly guy again picked me up by the feet and took out all my ice cream money. Well heres the deal Mr Arab investor, If you will give me 600 million bucks heres what I will do with it. First I will give myself a big raise so I can buy my wife something nice so she will stop whooping my butt after the big guy down the street takes my money. Then I will buy all the guys at the fab some ice cream because its damn hot in there and they have had a bad attitude these days when they think they will be working for the Taiwonese soon. Then I will take the rest of the money go down to the street and try to sneak past that big guy and put it in the bank.

Forget the bigotry, that's nonsense.

Fella’s there are some seriously issue concerning this sale. AMD is a U.S. Defense Department supplier, privy to sensitive and classified technology, perhaps?

Conversely, if the sale does go through, you could bet your life Uncle Sam will not be purchasing AMD equipment used in projecting weapon yields in existing Defense Department Stock piles.

AMD working with the JPL on classified research projects? That’s over.

AMD and DARPA? OK, yeah, right.

It's not JR's fault, he was probably dropped on his head when he popped out his fat redneck american mums muff.

Not Racism

I find JR's comment more humorous than racist. Dave shouldn't generalize about Americans, anyway. I'm an American cautious and careful when it's called for but not racist . The United Arab Emirates offer will probably pass through that committee intact.

What's wrong with Arabian Micro Devices???

I'd understand your racism protest if the author would have used "Muslim" instead of Arabian, but they ARE ARABS!!! And proud ones!!!
So the one who gave an example of "Ashkenazi Micro Devices" is very much wrong, cause the proper analogy would be "Israeli Micro Devices" (ignoring the mismatching "I" for the "A").

So all of you who are looking for the anti-arab racist-witch-hunt, can extinguish your torches now! Go take your incitement elsewhere!
