Phenom slowed again
Soap opera continues unabated
AMD IS SET to release only three Phenoms on the 19th, and it is a step down from what we expected just weeks ago. We were expecting Phenom models 9500, 9600 and 9700 at 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6GHz. The bottom two are at 89W and the top at 125W. Sadly, that is not to be.
On a more recent set of slides for the Spider launch dated "October/November 2007", we are told the chips coming out on the 19th are indeed 9500, 9600 and 9700, but they have been castrated to mean a mere 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4GHz. Wattage also stays the same by model. Aargh.
It looks like AMD lost a bin on the chips, two if you are counting the 2.8 that they wanted to have out by the end of the year. If they get a speed bump to 2.6 in December, well, it probably won't cut it.
AMD will be more competitive, but they won't win any benches at this rate. It looks like the only thing they will have going for them is a decent GPU and a great chipset. µ

Phenom
Dear AMD, get your friggin act together. Or be prepared to offer the farm up for sale on Ebay.I have been waiting for the past few months to buy a new machine. An AMD machine.
But unfortunately it looks like the good old days of thunderbird are long gone & I cannot expect cutting edge performance anymore...
With the news of even lower clocks on release...alas I must go with the Core 2.
Phenom
AMD are teaching us "grasshoppers" the value of patience.Alas I have pulled all of my hair out and no longer need it shaved off master !!
When will this end?
A little late
I'm ready for 4x4!!!!!I don't care if my power meter spins like a merigoround on meth either.
Why Bother
Why even bother? AMD needed 2.8Ghz about 9 months ago. This has become a joke, I just hope they have a new CPU up their sleeves.Phenom
I don't see what the hubbub is. My 4400+ is still churning through VMs, D3 engines and whatever else.I remember the last word being 2.2-2.4GHz at launch, not 2.6GHz. It's unfortunate that the barrier to entry to quad core is so high but AMD seems to be executing on their market share goals.
Q4 may see 25% again, especially if the sellout of Barcelona keeps going and mobile growth continues.
Turion is probably the highest margin part right now as they are almost 100% 65nm with only half the cache.
Stick a fork in AMD - they are DONE
They've botched the server market with Barcelona. It's a non-compete with the 5300 due to clock rates not being able to ramp (they are stuck at 1.6Ghz.) When the 5400 series comes out it will be far far worse...Now on the desktop they are doing the same slip. I would not be suprised if even the 2.4Ghz was "optimistic" for launch. On the Barcelona launch a 1.9 was to be abailable, but that has slipped to a 1.6Ghz...
Intel is also holding back so even if AMD does come out with a minor miracle we'll see 3.6Ghz+ Peryns days later which turns the tables yet again...
AMD vs Intel
I have been quite a loyal fan of AMD... for no apparent reason. Although I'm not quite an enthusiast who upgrades regularly, I've been sticking with AMD's for my last 3 CPU... my current Athlon1800+ (yes it's hella old but i still think it does whatever it's supposed to do), Duron 800, K6-233 (and before that Intel486SX33)...For a change I'm considering buying a higher model, but it looks like i might as well get something else this time... =/
Sad but true
Tis true, where are the AMD fanbois these days?I miss them...
R.I.P. DAAMIT...
Honest judge
Intel is beating us by an unfair buisness practices. It was only an accident that we caught intel with their pants down on the P4. Now they have gone back to there old ways and so have we.... We need you to protect us from their unfair engineering advantagechoose wisely
if you buy intel instead of AMD this round, you may not have any choice in the next. AMDs mere presence keeps chipzilla semi-honest. let's keep it that way!No benches to win?? Are you out of your mind?
As usual, they never show the big picture....Try this for a change: http://www.cray.com/
What Intel??? No sign of them....
What Quad-core??? Just look at Tyan >>4/8 CPU board!!!<<
That board already takes 16 cores!!! And NUMA something Intel doesn't have....
What late? Who cares, it's there already for months and months...
Morons :-)
Promises
Why is it that AMD lately is promising a lot of great things... so then 3 weeks before the launch they start to talk clearer. Gosh, they should not say anything about it and release it so people do the talking and not give false expectations. I've been an AMD fan for a while but this guys can't seem to complete their own goals...not major
its the wrong direction, of course, but the low end has changed from 2.2 to 2.2, and the medium from 2.4 to 2.3.It's only the 125watt overpriced monster that I wasn't going to buy anyway, that slipped from 2.6 to 2.4.
Not to say, we didn't want 3.0 all along and this is the wrong direction to be heading...but taken by itself, no big deal.
@That Guy
Didn't you hear? There will be no more 4x4. AMD killed it off.http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2007/09/12/amd-no-longer-fasn8ted
Very sad. This dual-socket platform was the last thing that would've made AMD somewhat interesting.
Pricing?
Does this mean all the Phenoms will be sold for under $250? Q6600 is for $279 on Newegg--and on a Desktop, it will beat any of these quadies handily almost across the spectrum.not over until 2009
If AMD can sell the parts for 279 and less, it could really be a challenge to the Q6600s, which are selling like hotcakes right now. The question is.. can they afford to do so?Come 2009 when Nehalem hits, AMD will be SOL.. but who knows? with the CPU/GPU hybrid stuff runnin in the background.
huh
What I like about the Inquirer is that they rarely show sources for their claims especially in this case with the down clocked AMD chips.Whole reason why I only take their posts without sources with a grain of salt.
AMD ROCKS!
I think people need to stop picking on AMD. They got caught off gaurd by C2D/C2Quad just like Intel did with K8. Get over it people geez. If AMD can keep the prices in the right spot they will always sell chips. And plus when Intel moves to Nehalem and has to build memory controllers on the cpuz, lets see how long it takes them to get that right.
Sorry AMD
I'm not going to be waiting around anymore, it's time to buy that Core 2.2x4
I'm ready for two phenom dies in one package. 2x4=8=Octo=Video editing for everybody. Is it possible?
Phantom
Why would i want a Phenom at even 2.6 when i could get a Peryn than will clock to 4Ghz on AIR!!! AMD better start doing something. All im seeing is slides and promises from both AMD and ATI where are the products???re: No benches to win?? Are you out of your mind?
Erm Mister Genius, this article is talking about PHENOM, a consumer product, and not the OPTERONS in the Crays and Tyans that you're blathering on about.Looks like there's going to be only one real bin of Phenom... the Slow Bin.
To ken: you are an idiot.
Unfair business practices? Wake up and smell the coffee. This is business and if you are not smarter and faster then the competitor, you are due for obsolescence. The writing was on the wall that AMD's phenom was going to be a phenomenal phailure. They did design changes and process changes at the same time which was a huge no-no.
The absorption of ATi also has the company still off balance.
Just be glad nVidia's chipset stuff is hot and ATi still makes a sweet bundle off the Broadway chips.
Charlie is dancing
The only benchmarks Phenom is going to win against Kentsfield is Sandra Memory Bandwidth and Everest Memory latency.Too bad, K8 already beats Core2 in these useless benchmarks.
does it matter?
In the article "AMD goes into Overdrive" that you guys posted here, doesnt the screen shot show a quad core phenom with each core running over 2.4? The screen shot showed each core running at 2.9, 3.0, 3.2, and 3.3, granted all 4 cores were not running at 3.3ghz but doesnt this at least hint that these phenoms may be able to scale well beyond the 2.2-2.4 launch speeds?AMD Quiting < Niagra Falls Running Dry.
If You took AMD 3.2 GHZ & SHRUNK it, Heck take out bit of Clunk, too it'd probably go 3.8+ ghz, so what, it'd be no better than it had beenWe Need ULTIE Processor, Actually Ultie Mainboard, Which Hopefully this New More Complex equipment will Force Out.
So 4400+ can do Ultimate on VM, yet Mainboard needs processor to run it More Complexly than that, will 4400+X2 run ULTIE level ON 4X4 main?, we'll probably never get answer, as pin count has changed. I expect less upgrade need directly from processor itself, its just extra blessing its going thru roof. Its FAR OUT,MAN: AMD Multi Core/Multi Processor/Multi Game card CrossfireX & of course, ULTIMATE Ultie_TOM.
Its an EXAMINER.Hey-Man there Really ARE Diamonds in These Woods.FAR OUT MAN.TOMMY X CHONG.IN 1/3 SECOND.
Give Me Mainboard, Where Ultie Does Roam....wid bunch o'cores & new controllers for Ultie Standards needed to ULTIlZIE World.&Where Buffaloe Roam w/ Ultie_TOM, Minsterial bsong Writer..la,la.

waiting
waiting waiting waiting, i bet nothing comes on the 19th except an a press release pushing the date another month..........R&D vs R&D
Lets be honest, Intel has 10x the R&D capacity that AMD has. On top of that Intel has many times more than 10x the budget that AMD has. What's a miracle here is that AMD is still in the game with a competitive product. This is rough...
AMD needs 45nm and they need it now. Without it, I dont think they have a chance. 4GHz Penryns are already being obtained. The only thing holding AMD together is ATI, and even that seems to be a slippery slope. The 2900XT beats the 8800's in benchmarks but real world performance in games is another story.
I just dont see the problem moving to 45nm for AMD as opposed to Intel. Intel seems to do it with ease and has room to spare (4Ghz+ Penryns already in ES form in all sorts of forums.) AMD seriously needs a miracle.
And what happened to that article posted by The INQ which stated 30k 3DMark2K6 in some crossfire Barcelona setup, I still think that was some serious BS. You're loosin yer credibility INQ. :(
Bigger numbers == better?
Are we back to ranking chips solely on clockspeed? No doubt that is still a useful metric, but using it as the only metric was proven ludicrous back when the P4 failed to perform on par with the slower clocked Athlon's.The Phenom has new features that will probably not be matched by Intel anytime soon. For example the ability to run cores at different speeds. No need to run all cores at full speed when one core core can handle the job and allow the other cores to idle. Lower power consumption is the result. Data centers looking for "balanced" power have a new option.
Would I like to see higher clocks?
Yeah. If low power consumption is not victim.
Do I need higher clocks today?
My low-wattage BE-2400
idles 98% of the time.
Need I say more?
Will the Phenom give you bragging rights?
Not if "clock speed" is the only thing
in your vocabulary.
Pity the fool who's self-esteem is proportional to his CPU's clock-speed.
It's not as big a deal as sites say it is anyway
It's pretty comical on how people are willing to go ape over a few benchmarks that mean very little in real world use of a home computer. Most performance is in the graphics card and even a 2.2ghz AMD cpu is more than fast enough to run any software today and into the near future but like most propagandasts know it's easy to sway people with simi belivable bull.
One thing that scares me is the number of people who swiched to intel right away for no real good reason other than "wow, look at me, I can overclock it more" and a lot of sites are hyping this garbage up big.
When Intel was the only ones selling cpu's a long time ago the price of a 286 cost more than most computers do today. If you want to see those days return stick with your current mind set or lack of it as seems to be. If AMD falls we are in a world of hurt. It's funny that people are very narrow minded and don't think of the long term effects of their actions. Like anyone with a home computer needs a 4 core cpu anyway, or even a SLI video setup or even a 2x core is mostly wasted. People are historicly easy to sway and it seems more so in the computer indust. It's very true, just because someone knows how to use a computer doesn't make them a smart person.
If people were more concerned about getting more out of their computer they should be harping on the software side, if it was programmed good we would be doing just fine on a single core 1ghz cpu or even slower.
Marketing, ahh, the opiate of the masses....
yo
I'm an AMD fan boi.Just checking in.
I really want a four by four eight core.
But there's not much to do but wait is there?
I've built k6-400, a duron at 700 mhz, xp1500. xp1800, xp 2400(2), xp 2500, a64 3000(3), a64 x2 3800, a64 x2 4200, a64 x2 4400.
Oh, and 2 p3 800 a p4 2 ghz and a p4 2.8 ghz.
I've also owned but not built a pentium m 1.7, a dual core intel something at 1.7, a 286 12 mhz, a cyrix at 200 mhz(actually i rebuilt most of that one), a 486 66, an 8088 at 4.77 mhz, an amiga 500 at 7 mhz, an amiga 1200(still in use, is the main sequencer of my studio) at 12 mhz(now with solid state compact flash hard drive and lcd monitor), a spectrumvideo, a commodore 64(those were at 1 mhz).
I feel old.
No matter, waiting a few more months for my eight core is not gonna kill me. But I must admit intel is looking ever better these days. I just wanted there to be some competition you know. And in the xp days AMD were significantly cheaper for approx the same speeds, and the socket 939 days were AMDs alone, leader in price and performance. But it seems intel has recovered, their core 2 dual(hate that ridiculous name) thingies are very fast and they stand quite alone in the 4 core field now. Friend of mine got an 8 core intel machine where he works(heavy number crunching), bandwidth isn't alll that but the datasets aren't vast so that's ok. I tend to work with bigger datasets so I'm holding out for the amd thing to get more bandwidth. I've got a major gig in january though, and I'm really gonna need an eight core to do what I wanna do.
Anyways, that was it from MTV raps. Yo y'all
Dumb
Buy a crappy chip from a 2nd rate company so in the future competition is preserved so you always have a choice between the best and the rest? I'm confused. Some of you are nuts..
OMG lets all switch to Intel because we can only type in word at 32000 FPS with an AMD 6000+ instead of 32500 FPS with the bestest Intel processor!!!The world is in shambles and we should all convert now or else we will all meet a horrible dooomz0r!
NOOOOOOO!
Those of you who have preferred AMD over the years... you realized there is a HUGE speed increase when switching from an Athlon XP to a current AM2 processor...?
Maybe try using one before passing judgment on them...?
ummm Seriously???
does it really matter who wins in all the benchies??? all i care is that my pc and games run smoothly and get good frame rates.. do i really notice any difference between the two unless i run benchmarks.. HECK NO!! im a big fan of the underdog.. a black edition is my next purchase when i upgrade... its a steal!!nuff said..
Goliath likely to win
In this case, size DOES matter.AMD must execute flawlessly to compete against the scale & $$$ advantage of Intel.
Intel can better afford to make mistakes, AMD can't.
Ironically the Giant has executed w/ swiftness and precision since Core 2 intro. AMD has been meandering w/ confusion since when it's most mattered for them to get it right.
They won't survive long w/ their continued blundering against Intel's game.
Time
It took Intel from August 2003 until June 2006 to catch up to AMD. That's almost 3 years. AMD has only been in the 2nd rate position since June 2006, only 1.5 years. Yet somehow everyone is already proclaiming AMD dead.Offerings suck
Granted picking AMD is the "right" choice, especially if the company is to survive, but it's getting so much harder with Intel's offerings being so much faster and cheaper.Mind you I have a 939 based 4600 and plan to run it for another year again. It's not the most amazing system, but it's got an 640mb 8800 behind it and a reasonable DFI mobo and plays all my games, so I'm happy for now. :)
Yawn
This website has become as factual as Bush on a 24 hour drinking session.Just read the news over at Daily tech instead.
2 Late....
Sorry AMD - I've been a loyal fanboy for the past 5 years of my gaming escapades. This time the wait was too long for even me to bear - I plumped for a Q6600 running happily at 3Ghz over a month ago.
R U serious?
to the previous poster:Are you seriously suggesting people to buy a clearly inferior product just to help AMD's bottom line?
I don't want AMD to tank, but I am sure not going to support their 3 year old architecture and comparatively lousy processors.
Asking people to buy an inferior AMD product in the face of well priced and superior Intel chips is really not a solution. In fact, it is about as bad a solution as just having Intel all alone, either way you get less performance for your $$$.
The best advice to the consumer is to buy Intel after the launch of the soon to be destroyed Phenom, which will get you the best bang for your buck, and let the market sort out what to do with AMDead.
ha, ha... on the bright side, at least there is one AMD fanboy alive and kicking.
Free Market
If AMD cannot make a good cpu, they deserve to go under. By buying Intel, you force AMD to make better chips.Scale it
Games drive it all. You'll take 4 R3800 in Crossfire with Phenom (whateever the MHZ are) and the new AMD chipset and put it against
any Q6xxx with 2 (if even) of Nvidia's finest GPU's
(does it work in Vista yet?) and have a look at the gaming performance.
I still have. . .
Well well Im still on the socket 939 And it´s working just fine OpteroNtm 185 just purchased last month.dead socket but still rocking 4 me the CPU world is a scam like the pharmasutical world hehe but i wish that thay would stop white the 2.2,2.6,2.8,GOO! 3.0 and Up Plzzz! its year 2008 soon OMG wake up AMD kick some ass, still a AMD Lover :Ddont give up on AMD
one comment said that Intel has been holding back, and that it will put something new on the market as soon as AMD does... i to think that will happen soon after phenoms release but right after Intel does that AMD will put out a quad core with some real power... BTW did you know that Intel uses the same assembly line with all there current CPU's and AMD just made a new one... this means that AMD is going to have the capabilities to keep on making new CPU's for a long time wile Intel will be forced to stop making new "innovative" products until they have a new assembly lineAMD is chugging boys..
I was a chosen AMD cpu tester for years. But once the cpus started with high thermals I bowed out of the testing and turned Intel. Ive been with Intel for 4 yrs now and I will have to say that AMD has won me back again. The X2 line is cool running and when it comes to benchmarks AMD is right there with Intel. Currently I have a Black Edition 3.3Ghz and its Cool,Stable and Fast.Intel may have the edge people but the food we eat Crysis,COD4 and Hellgate London. They are in the middle of the my plate, not the edge.
Yum Yum, Eat up AMD BOYS... Lets play the game...
WTF is wrong with posters
What makes me laugh to the point of choking..People here saying I need this CPU (regardless of Intel or Amd), same goes for the graphics cards articles.
I doubt any of the people commenting about performance actually use a high powered pc - and if they do, not very well obviously, why do I say this ?
Well answer this:
What exactly do you use your PC for ?
1. Games
2. Compiling (eg programs/code)
3. Benchmarking
4. Something else
Answers to the above
If you are a gamer, then you will have the top end graphics cards, if you havent then you are just adding comments for no reason. All new games utilise the GFX GPU not the PC, I run a fairly powerful PC myself, it uses an FX cpu and 8800gtx (x2 in Sli) I have never seen much above 20% useage when playing Crysis, HL2, TFC2, Portal (irratating game) ETQW, far cry or C.O.D. I havent found a game that those cards totally eat.
If you are compilling and using a home pc then you are a pillock, who doesnt understand the nature of compiling, get a Xeon or Opteron, these are high powered CPU's design for number crunching. These cpus are not server compilers, these Phenoms are desktop cpu's not work stations.
If you are Benchmarking and nothing else, you are just a very silly person, who just wants some recognition, you will probably be saying "Hey guys mines better than yours" and although people acknowledge you with a grin, secretly they are thinking thoughts I cannot write here for censorship
If it is Something else, and you fall into this bracket and none of the others above, and you currently have 100% cpu useage on your Home PC,You will have a pc spec that is less than the LGA 775 intel or AM2 940 cpus - then you are probably in need of a cpu, memory and graphics upgrade, but you would NOT be posting comments flaming the cpu, you would be happy to get anything better than a am2 or 775...If you have a 775 or am2 and a top end graphics card(s) with 2gb+ memory then you cannot be using 100% cpu..Yes I am sure you can open up PS Pro, Winamp, 3 games and stream music and open up 2 excel documents and surf the net, then say oh look 95% useage, but then who the hell does that ? Only someone who doesnt understand the proper workings of a PC, being fairly lame and shouldn't have a pc in the first place. (get a life)
So there we have it..
Not everyone likes the same PC components, but why slate bits you dont like ? Nothing better to do...
Price/Power ?
A true competition is when you put 2 machines that cost the same together because in the end price matters a lot, i would like to see such a benchmark. It is important that we don't allow Intel to have monopoly because then AMD will stay behind and that means you will buy lees powerful CPUs from Intel at a higher price.
