Rok powers Bollywood via mobile phone

Signs mobile TV deal with India's BSNL

UK BASED Rok Entertainment has signed a deal with leading Indian mobile operator, BSNL, which will stream TV to regular 2.5G (GPRS) enabled phones.

The deal will enable Indian subscribers to watch Zoom, a Bollywood channel; entertainment channel, Bindaas; Geet, a Hindi music channel; a live Hindi news channel from ETV, plus EMN – an English music channel.

The total of six TV channels will only set subscribers back INR 150 per month, which is around £1.90.

Rok's technology enables it to video to stream to mobile phones at speeds up to 14 frames per second over 2.5G, although speeds of up to 24 frames per second are also possible over 3G or Wi-fi.

BSNL with more than 28 million subscribers in India represents one of Rok's biggest potential audiences, although the technology is currently being rolled out in some 30 countries including China.
Yet many analysts continue to insist that mobile TV only works across 3G. µ
