HP admits wireless laptop problems
6000 and 9000 series Pavilion notebooks of doom
AFTER sticking its fingers in its ears and going la-la-la really loudly, HP has finally admitted that there are problems with the built-in Wi-fi on its 6000 and 9000 series Pavilion notebooks.
For a while the HP forum, here, has been all a-buzz with problems about the lappies' Wi-fis not working. The wireless card detected the network with all the efficiency of a blind person trying to find a black cat in a dark room that was not there.
However there had not been a dicky bird from HP until hacks at ZDNet wrote an attack on the outfit for ignoring its users.
Now it seems that someone from HP Total Care has logged on to say that HP has a BIOS update and some instructions on getting this resolved.
The spokesHP seemed to think that the problem only hurt those with AMD machines running Vista.
Readers of the forum also seemed to treat HP's advice with a large dose of mock. For a start the fault effected XP users and it was not a driver problem as fresh installs of the OS don’t resolve it. It appears it cannot be a Wi-fi card fault because those who replaced it found that it still does not work. Others who tried HP's new Bios update found it hopeless too.
In fact, the only cure that anyone has found that worked with 100 per cent certainty was to replace the motherboard or get a new computer. µ

Problems with Vista & Wi-fi
I have had problems with my HP 6000 series laptop not connecting reliably to wi-fi, Intel not AMD processor though. Switching to Kubuntu solved the problem immediately :-)That explains it...
I have a DV6000 with a Turion and yes, the Wi-Fi takes it's sweet time connecting to my home router. It also seems to have issues with channel 1 specifically. Near home, channels 6 and 11 are crowded and channel 1 is nearly empty. I have to use 6 or 11 regardless of the traffic because on 1 the card pokes along a dismal speed if it even connects. I have 2 other notebooks that merrily connect regardless of channel.not me
I have a Pavilion 9000 series and I've never had problems with the wireless. I've got a Core 2 Duo chip and I've "downgraded" (upgraded?) from Vista to XP. Finding all the drivers... now that was a pain in the arse. But once I found them I have had no trouble at all.Fix
I actually fixed this exact issue by resetting BIOS to defaults. Worked on 2 different machines too.Bizaare thing was both were already set as default :)
I got me
I have the dv6000 and I just started to have the issue with the wireless. Called HP told them I reseated the wireless card, update to latest bios, updated driver for wireless card with no luck. All this with 5 days left on my 1 year warranty. I will be sending it in for repair. They are claiming it is most likely the MB and should have it back in 1 to 2 weeks.A well known problem
Believe me, the problem is real. For many people it happens about 6 months. For me it did, and now another six months it is gone again. If HP don't take responsibility they will soon find out what happens when the s**t hits the fan...HP Fixed the problem for $300
I have a friend whose HP Pavilion dv9000 wireless switch stopped working all of the sudden only 10 days after the warranty expired. So the only solution was to send it in for Mail-in-repair which hp did for about $300 which includes the fedex overnight standard shipping. They replaced the a part of the motherboard and now it works fine.Wireless problem
My Pavilion 9000 series has just decided that it does not believe it has a wireless connection. The button is on but no-one is home. The problem started occasionally - but now - impossible. In device manager - it does not recognise any wireless card. Apparently i have to remaster system - a job i really don't want to do - then replace card or possibly motherboard. Can anyone suggest anything that might help? I have a month left on warranty !!Problem
I just sent in my laptop for the exact reasons everyone has posted. I have a DV2225NR laptop with AMD duo core and Vista. The wireless adapter stopped working 7 months into my warranty. At first it stopped working and started again, then it just stopped compeletely. The HP guy told me to reseat the wireless card and reset the bios. I said "hell no" fix it.I can help
If you are still having probs with your HP Wi-Fi, we may be able to help. We are investigating a class action case. You may email me at jhartley@rdblaw.comridiculous
MY HP laptop didn't pick up any internet connection from a few days ago. I called the HP technical support and all they said was they were going to order a wireless card and schedule a pickup so that they can take a look at it.. but my thing is, is it really HP's policy that they're asking for my credit card number? (that technician had some heavy accent) they say they're not going to charge me but that's just their policy... has anyone ever had this problem? You can contact me at meebelle(AT)hotmail.comThanks!
Me, too!
I bought a dv6000 laptop last September and it was running XP. In March the wireless card completely disappeared from the device manager. I sent the laptop to their "award winning repair service" THREE times, and each time got it back still not working (note: they will delete any user accounts/environment settings you have, so be sure to back them up!). They ended up sending me a new laptop with Vista in May. Guess what happened yesterday? Yes, wireless card disappeared from the device manager again. *sigh* This is the last laptop from HP for me!HP notebook wireless problem
I wasted 2 hours chatting with HP support. Then I downloaded and flashed my BIOS and "PRESTO". Problem fixed.....!!!!!!WiFI
Dv600 with Core 2 Duo chip & XP. Exactly the same symptoms here, laptop used to take an eternity to connect. Now literally just after 6 days after warranty expired the things packed up altogether. Tried resetting bios/drivers & physically re-installing the card but to no avail. Spoke to tech support & they’ve washed their hands of it. Quite honestly simply the worst customer relations/tech support Indian call centre I’ve ever dealt with. Call centre actually hung-up on me twice, they know there’s a problem! All is not lost though, like most Hewlett Packard devices they make excellent doorstops,,,,, Hewlett Packard; NEVER AGAIN ,, EVER,, Trust-Me!!!HP cost me
I am a soldier and I am deployed at the moment and the only net available to me is through my wifi. Low and behold my wifi card doesn't exist anymore. This makes the 1800 dollar communication investment I made completly useless to me and now I have to pay 20 to talk to my wife and kids for a half an hour. Thank god my bunkmate just ordered a dell. If any fixes come out I would appriciate a heads up. I will check back here. Thanks guysyet another......
We have a HP 6000 series and our wireless is messing up too...Ours hooks up,but it says that we aren't connected...And then in anywhere from 5 to 15 mins. later it throws us off. Then the dial up connection box comes up,and we have to x that out and goto network connections and click on our connection to get it to go back on line.We can't go to repair connection because for some reason that doesn't work. You have to reconnect every time...It's like it's not reading the signal at all, it is getting online though the whole time saying that it's not.......Class Action Proceeding
A colleague of mine is pursuing a class action against HP for this issue. My office is not currently involved, so I cannot answer questions, unfortunately. He has representatives for the class already. Hopefully he will be successful so keep yours eyes peeled for news. . . although it will be at least many months before there is any resolution. Good luck!wifi not working - solution
Although this may not be the perfect solution, HP are in the process of sending me a box so I can return my Pavillion DV9005US, but I decided to try an external usb wireless adapter by Linksys and it works a dream. In my view it is $70 well spent to keep my computer and not lose all my data yet again in returning a computer to HP.Needless to say, I will NEVER buy HP again. I've bought five HP laptops in the last three years, three of them in the last year, the pavillions, and I regret every penny I've given to HP. Their customer service and total disregard for the people paying their wages, ie us, is an insult.
help me please
Can i ask how you can reset your BIOS?email me please:

WiFi Problems
My wife is also having wifi problems on her Pavilion TX1120, AMD with Vista. The device manager does not even see the card. Did the online tech support several times, had the store we purchased from replaced the card (per HP) and now I am going to HP customer support hell because the store sent it to them once, and they replaced the monitor and sent it back. We are suppose to be getting a box to ship it directly to them again. They said after 3 repair attempts we can get a refund, but the first attempt doesn't count because the store sent it to them. It is crazy, never again will we have an HP.Promised fix
I have the 6000 and did register it through hp. I just got an e-mail about the bios and also an additional year warranty coverage just for the wireless problem. After the Bios upgrade ( a waste of time) and an hour on the phone they are sending me a box to send it back to them in for repairs. No charge. Hope this helpssame problem
I have your comments with great interest as I have a HP d 6000 laptop with the same problems I have tried resetting the wieless card made no differance updated the driver still the same alsupdated the bios which made no differance can anyone supply an answer to fixing t problem as I bought the laptop in the US and live in ScotlandHP service plans suck
I bought an HP laptop at Best Buy and the 2 year service plan about a year ago, and I just started having problems with the wireless network card. It's not even recognized in my device manager!! I gave it to Best Buy to send it for repair which they did, and then they called me a week later saying my laptop was back. I went in to get it, and low and behold HP had NOT DONE a damn thing to it. WHAT IS THE POINT OF BUYING A DAMN SERVICE PLAN FOR SO MUCH MONEY AND SENDING IT AWAY FOR REPAIR IF HP IS JUST GOING TO SEND IT BACK WITH NO SOLUTION??!! r they retarded or something?? This has definately made me think twice about buying another HP product. So now it's been two weeks since Best Buy sent it back to them, and I can't even inquire if it's ready or what the status is cuz it's been sooooooooooo busy with the xmas season and now damn boxing week... the lines are huge at the stores... HP better have fixed it or given authorization for a new laptop SOON or i'm going to be seriously pissed... i would now think twice about buying another HP product or at least buying the service plan... I could have had it fixed in a couple of days by a friend, but since it was under the service plan that i paid so much money for it only made sense to send it in.... now i'm rethinking my decision... the service plan doesn't seem to be about "service"... and like one of the comments made in an article about this topic, HP DOES seem to still be sticking their fingers in their ears going LALALALA not acknowledging the well known problem that they're having with these laptops... DAMN U HP!!! hurry up with my laptop!!!fix
Granted, this problem is annoying. (I too, have had problems with the card, on a dv6000) but, never the less, one would think the stress that comes with dealing with HP's poor support is not worth it. one simple solution is to go get a simple, 30 dollar wireless card. via usb, or expansion slot. Thats probrably a better solution then giving it to HP, simply because, judging from what I'v heard, its not worth it.HP6000 latop
I have a HP Pavillion laptop that I purchased in January of 2007. It has a Intel Pentium dual core processor 1.6 ghz which is pretty much a core duo with half the L2 cache. It works fine for my needs though. I never had problems with connecting to the network regarding wireless connections besides the router or the network provider. I would just reset the router(I use netgear) or call the provider which has been minimal over the past year My girlfriend has a Dell notebook with a core duo processor 1.7ghz and better modem with XP. Overall, she has a better system. When either of has a problem with connecting to the network(both of us have wirelss), both of us expericence it. BTW I use comcast and a motorola modem w/ a wireless netgear router.Misinformation or disinformation
I can't believe that HP forum thread. Everyone on their has a justiable cause to complain yet some misleading enitities are masquarading as moderators and redirecting people to a HP page which is owning up to a completely different fault with no link to wifi !!other problems...
i didn't have any issues with my wi-fi connection, it's actually pretty good on my one (6000 series) however i think i have a greater problem. The screen often turns off automatically & just yesterday ithe backlight has malfunctioned & the speakers had smoke coming out of it. so if u think about it, a wi-fi problem could be the lease of your problems!Same Song & Dance - class action??
Here's my email to Mark Hurd, HP CEO. Wanna do the same, here's the link:http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/execteam/email/hurd/index.html
I am currently the unhappy owner of a Pavilion dv6000. I, like the many others on yours and other PC forums, have a wireless issue. Why has this product not been recalled? Why do I have to shut my real estate business down for the amount of time it takes to repair an issue that HP was aware of at the time I purchased this product 11 months ago? Why is there not a local service center for repairs to minimize consumer inconvenience? I am considering initiating a class action lawsuit-there are a considerable amount of people affected by this to justify doing so. I am a member of National Association of Realtors - we have partnered with HP to promote your products. I will be going to the association about the lack of service and product quality. This quote on Hurd’s bio is a mockery “Everything we do must be for the customer. If it’s not, then we need to reconsider why we’re doing it.”
Huge reconsideration, Mr. Hurd - you’re doing very little for the customer.
At the very least, I’d like the option of having my computer fixed locally to minimize my inconvenience. Alternatively, I’d like a replacement product and ideally, I’d like a refund and will purchase a Dell, whom I should’ve remained loyal to (owned one 5 years prior to this purchase - 0 problems). It was time to upgrade - I’ve clearly made a bad choice along with 1000’s of others.
What do you intend to do about it?? - and quickly - my warranty expires 2/18/08. If I don’t hear from anyone with a better solution than ship your computer off with an average turnaround of 10 days, I will move forward with legal action. (My business is largely dependent on my ability to work on the computer - I am shut down and making no money without it – It will affect my livelihood).
What!?
My wireless completely disappeared. what the hell?BIOS Default Reset Worked
One of the comments below was to reset the BIOS to defaults even if they already are in the default setting. It worked for me and was a quick fix to get my WiFi up and working again.Same here!
The same is happening here, I boutgh a DV6000US last year in United States, now im in Brazil and the laptop just seems not to recognize the wireless card, the icons desapeared from the system tray.I´ve been for hours with HP chat and tried everything, reseted the card, updated the drivers, flashed the bios, none work.
Im affraid because after everything i have readed about, it seems to be to be the moatherboard, and it probably should be replaced since the problem wasn´t solved for the ones who replaced the wireless card. And there is even some other people who is having the same king of problem but with the LCD and the DVD drive.
For now what im going to do is to buy a USB Wireless adapter and just hope and pray that do not appear other problems.
Any new info or way to fix, please e-mail me, i would really appreciate help!

My experience with the DV6000
I bought a DV6005ea a couple of months ago only because I got a very good price on it (If not I'd never buy a HP product). Similar to others posting here my wireless card suddenly disappeared completely from the device manager. I tried resetting BIOS, reinstalling this and that, reseating the card physically and so forth, all to no avail. HP told me I'd have to send in the PC to get it fixed. I can't do that since I am completely dependant on this PC for work related activities. Instead I bought a USB WLAN card, which is fine. But then the power supply started malfunctioning intermittently, probably because of the enourmous amount of heat it's radiating - both supply and PC are so warm I can't actually have the PC on my lap. It is, in other words, not a "laptop" but just a "top". Oh and the PC makes so much noise I can hear it out in the livingroom at night. Even that I could live with, but about 8 hours ago the PC wouldn't boot at all - the screen stays black and it makes 3 beeping sounds (long-shor-short I think). I've snooped around the net for this problem, and behold: It turns out that the video card completely dying is yet another known issue with this PC. DAMN IT! I am never leaving Dell again! (Gave away my trusty old Inspiron 2200 - dumbest thing I've ever done. Only problem I had with it was that the screen started displaying some odd colors. Called Dell up and they actually sent me a new display over night by plane for me to replace myself - that's what I call customer care!)Anyways; seems like I'll have to manage without the laptop for quite some time. What really sucks is that I can't even backup all the VERY important data stored on it, and I'm afraid it'll all be lost once the guys at HP do their repair routine.
To all you people who are still ONLY experiencing WLAN problems with your Pavilions: Try tricking HP into fixing your video card as well since it's likely to die any time soon. Tell them the computer sometimes won't start, making beeping sound and leaving the screen black or something. Maybe it'll help.
Sorry for the long post, I'm frustrated :(
Just Buy A New Network Adapter
My father has the HP 6000 series laptop with a similar issue. The internal network adapter wasn't even recognized anymore. I've seen all of these comments about having HP fix it or updating BIOS and drivers etc...However, the easiest fix was to just go out and buy an external USB wireless network adapter. Your popular retail electronic store will have these and cost anywhere from 30 to 60 bucks. Works great, easy to set up, connects via one of your USB ports, and is better than the internal one that came with your laptop. Beats dealing with HP or screwing with your laptop if you don't know much about computers.HP has no integrity
HP has no integrity. They lie, and delete peoples posts, covering up the truth. They have no known fix for this problem.
What they are doing is replacing parts, but then the lap tops will have more problems shortly after the "fix"
I have to jump through the hoops each day to get the wireless to turn on.
My monitor is splitting across the bottom, and across the left side. I now use a screw driver to close the lid so that it properly closes.
For those having trouble with your monitor not turning on, turn the computer off, open the lid all the way back, turn the computer on, if you still don't have your monitor, leaving your monitor all the way open, press fn, and f4 at the same time, wait a few seconds, and if no monitor, click again, and wait a few seconds. It can take up to 6 such click and waits for it to work.
Also the monitor is more likely to turn on if you restart in safe mode.
For those that can't get the wireless to turn on, reinstall the wireless drivers, turn off the computer, remove power cord, remove battery, press and hold power button for several seconds, replace battery, replace power cord, turn power on, press repeatedly quickly f8 to go into safe mode with networking, go fully into safe mode with networking, wait 5 minutes, restart computer.
If you are not able to back up your files, and are sending your lap top in to be "fixed", then take your hard drive out of the computer and send in the computer without the hard drive, otherwise, you will surly loose your info on the drive even if HP says they won't do anything to it.

fed up
Similar to Zack my wireless broke 10 days after the warranty expired. Then the computer broke after tech support tried to fix it for me over the phone(and reformatted my HD). 3rd party confirmed that the mobo was fried and tried installing a new one. New one has failed twice going for a third time. If it fails then they will send it back to me and recommend that I contact HPCompaq 8510p wireless problem
Just chiming in with my own problem.I have a Compaq 8510p, both Wifi and Bluetooth stopped working this week.
They used to work perfectly before.
But now the cards are detected at the operating system level normally but seem to be disabled on the hardware (and i didnt do anything).
And the "wireless button (blue led)" doesnt do anything, actually it never did since i got the laptop - actually, i always thought it was just a led, not a button.
This sucks :(
no wireless
I have an HD Pavilion 5030. Suddenly it sees NO wireless networks. I have spent hours on the phone with foreign speaking people at so-called "tech support" to no avail. Last night, I was supposed to get email with the transcript of all the things that I was to try. It never arrived. No fix...Also, I have tried two USB wireless adapters and they don't do anything either. I have 3 HP's in the house....the next will be something else.shut down problem
Hi iam using 6000 series but problem is not wih wireless but it automatically shut down when left idle. please help me how to fix this problem.Re: Compaq 8510p wireless problem
Just reporting back to say that i fixed my problem (see above) by going to the BIOS and resetting to defaults. The blue led is on and i gots wireless!!
Problem not restricted to Wireless alone!
Hello,If you check here, you will agree thatthe problem is not with Wireless alone. There are multiple segments suffering with No Boot/ Display type of issues. Further, the affected series are dv2000, dv6000 & dv9000.

class action against HP
i'm very interested in the class action... i have the same problem and i have been losing a lot of time and money because i'm dependent on my laptop with wi-fi connection. Unfortunately, the wireless adapter suddenly went missing without any reason. I have an HP tx1005au. Pls. tell your friends never to buy HP again. i'll certainly make sure none of my friends ever buy an HP product. Then let's sue them....BULL SHIT
Im from Bulgaria, Europe. I was in the USA last summer and i bought an HP DV600 from BEST BUY. And now i have that problem with my wireless card too! I just got a wireless router for my ADSL but cant use it cause my laptop cant detect my wireless card... i thought its a small problem (maybe i did sumtin) but now im reading this and im PISSED OFFF!!! And one more thing.. my screen is splitin on the right side... separating the rubber from the screen! SHITA AGAIN! and the hard drive is so LOUD! I HATE HP! Can somebody tell me please can i send it back to best buy or there is no hope with those liars and incompetent noobs at HP and just try to sell it ?HP Cover-UP
Also, HP has been editing and deleting posts on their forums to try to do damage control. My motherboard got so bad that it crashed my hard drive. And with the new hard drive, it still only turns on when it wants to. Anyone that thinks that wireless or other problems are just the only problem, are wrong, as eventually you will have a dead computer as the motherboard continues to fry.
HP has no integrity.

HP Wi Fi problem
Wireless network adapter stoped working and the sistem can't recognize it anymore. soo one more unhappy HP customer!!!another for the list
Yes, I can add to the growing list of HP laptop users with the same issue. I bought my HP dv6000 a little under a year ago and my internet connection has been getting progressively worse over the past 4 months or so. I used to blame my neighbor with whom I'm sharing the wifi signal, but the problem getting worse lead me to conclude it wasn't a problem with the router. Now I find this article and all is clear. Luckily I still have some internet connection, but a page now loads 50% of the time and so I think it's a ticking timebomb before it all packs up. I'll try the BIOS suggestions, if I can figure out how to do it, I'm not a techhead. What's more I am living in Mexico, though I bought it in the US last year, so trying to send it in for repair will be a pain. Wish me luckGot my computer fixed
Well I got my computer back and am in the process of getting everything reinstalled. So far no wireless problems. They replaced the motherboard, wireless, screen hinges, and screen casing. When you get the box to send your computer in, it will have a sheet of paper for you to fill out with check boxes for you to check for all of the problems you are having. Be sure to note all of the problems that you are having with your computer.
Keep in mind that if you have this problem with your computer your computer will eventually crash like mine and others have. Your computer is a ticking time bomb

Damn Problem!!!
I'm having the exact same problem, and there's nothing left which I have not tried.P.S. visited like 30-40 sites and found no help.
I'll stay away from HP in future...
@All: Are you people sure that switching to Ubuntu will solve the problem?
Yet another...2
I am having the exact same problem as scott and paige...and I did buy a usb port wireless card to use and it worked for two days..and now even with that I am having the same connection problem....70 dollars..NOT well spent! So I read all these comments but can anyone tell me how to fix this? or if it can be fixed?tiff_anie85@yahoo.com
Had it with HP
I have a HP Pavillion 9000 going on two years in December. There is not ONE thing I like about it at all. I have sent it in at least twice to be worked on and called more times than I can remember. When I do get through, I am calling someone in Egypt. All they have really done for me is try to continuously sell me warranties. Now I know why. Word of Advice to anyone thinking of buying a HP....... DON"T!!!!!!!HP computers are junk
I sent my laptop in on 2008-04-23It is now 2008-06-13 already having wireless problems. It's not disappearing from the device manager yet, but it sometimes will be turned off when I turn the computer on, and I have to click on the icon and turn it back on.
The bios version is 3.E. I've got all of the other bios versions on my computer but don't have that one. I can't find the download for it on HP. Anybody remember where that version can be downloaded?

It got me after a year
I have a HP pavillion dv6000After a year of using. Very fine using btw. Only disturbing is that my battery on the remotecontrol died. Suddenly my network icon disappears, so I'm like hm? Checking my laptop network button, its orange, going to the start menu to check my connection when the menu suddenly disappears under the mouse ^^.
I tried resetting the bios. I tried reinstalling the drivers. I tried opening up the comp and blowing the parts. (Very easy to do with a manual btw).
My wireless is dead havent tried upgrading bios.
WiFi Fixed
having bought my son a dv6000 laptop last september ,was working fine till last week when he told me he wasnt connecting to the internet. after looking throught the web i didnt want to send it back to HP or try to mess with the BIOS .I decided to try and uninstall the wireless assistant then reinstall it from the HP web site. after down loading it and installing it ,guess what.......It works.might not work for everyone .but hey worked for me .HP is a lemon
My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000) was a gift from my husband on Christmas day, 2007. I opened the box that day and immediately began working with it. It went to blue screen twice that evening. I called the HP number because it clearly says NOT to return the laptop to the store of purchase.Over the next 6 months, my laptop has continually gone to blue screen multiple times a day.....one sitting it shut down 17 times. I have sent it in to HP twice, had it at a local FireDog who wanted to charge me $75.00 because they said it was a software issue. I have been on the phone with HP more times than I can count, usually speaking to someone I cannot understand. I have spoken with a customer service agent who assures me that they will fix the problem, but now we are going on 7 months and still no solution. Many of the agents I have spoken with on the phone have tried to tell me it is something I have done. I assure them that the first time I turned it on, it went to bluescreen and unless I'm just holding my mouth wrong, it can't be of my doing.
Circuit City, where it was purchased, doesn't want anything to do with it...says if I had returned it within the first two weeks, they could have exchanged it for me, for a restocking fee, of course. I pointed out that all the literature that came with the laptop said NOT to return it to the store.
I am frustrated and looking for help.
And Me
I have a HP DV6231 laptop and have had no problem with the wireless internet....until now, With the message that is so irritating, can not find the drivers. I have reformated it and yes it work for a short while and then disappeared. Now I have re-formatted it and no drivers can be found. Will keep you posted what HP has to say.
3 issues
Well, I think I have been a lucky one..I guess. I purchased a DV9000 in Jan of 06. and now I have been fighting several issues on mine. the bottom and left of the monitor is separating at the left hinge and up along the left side. The plastic is splitting due to the tightness of the hinge or more so the weakness of the plastic. I also have no wife. It would disappear as others have stated. It came back all by it's self, now it is gone again. I also have the screen blacking out and then 2 seconds later it will reboot. It seems to me that these are not meant to last that long and I have been luck to get this far with mine. but I have all 3 of the reported problems people hare having: cracking screen frame, video burning up and killing video and rebooting comp, and finally the wifi issue that also is burning up or just plane failing. I will by Dell next time I am sure of it. I have not sent it in for repair yet, but it is falling apart and just needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
