AMD loses $396 million in three months
Duopolies ain't what they used to be
AMD SPENT THREE months up to September 30th 2007 flogging chips yet managed to lose $396 million doing so.
As an excuse it said it was still trying to pay for ATI.
Rival Intel made $1.86 billion in a simlar period, but still decided to cut costs by axing 2,000 staffers.
One wonders how many AMDers will be forced to walk the walk.
By way of contrast, the INQ has managed to make a profit every year since it founded in 2001.
And we give our stuff away.

Same As it Always was
Isn't the history of the Intel/Amd duopoly just small periods of AMD making money interspersing large periods of Intel raping (oops, typo, reaping) the market and AMD throwing duffel bags of cash overboard? We used to blame it on AMD's inability to execute.
What's the point - second best just isn't what it used to be? In this case if you look further back than Opteron, it is just what it used to be.
Poor reading:
You guys are looking at the wrong numbers (but you're not the only ones). The numbers that matter are the operating costs (the loss of $457m cut to $226m in just one quarter is excellent), gross margins (up from 33 percent to 41 percent), and the total revenue, which is up roughly $300m.The number you are touting is a tax hit that affects dividend payout.
Still not making profit
But at least they lost less money this time. And that's including all the price cuts and NON-delivered Barcelonas. If they get their act together, they may actually pull it off this time.say what?
"By way of contrast, the INQ has managed to make a profit every year since it founded in 2001."is that for doing comedy?
True
You give your stuff away, that's true. But, in all honesty, you don't need a $3 billion typewriter to make your stuff either.:-)
Newsprofiteering
"By way of contrast, the INQ has managed to make a profit every year since it founded in 2001."And the INQ has managed to debase the so called "news" it publishes since it was founded in 2001.
And i'm not referring to this particular article, just 95% of all "news" (haha) that is published by the INQ.
[Be honest and publish your email addie, "RR". Ed.]
Cool........
Wow they could use all that money to make a new eiffel tower out of coins. One wonders what the $100 computer would do to them.........
Then again we like our $2+++K rigs..
