Gates refused entry to Nigeria

Might strain social services

ONE of the world's richest men, and software King of the World, Sir William Gates was denied a visa to enter Nigeria because officials were worried he was going to sponge off their social services.

Nigeria, which is famous for its countless widows with money in bank accounts that need laundering by western idiots, wanted proof that Gates would not live in Nigeria for ever.

Like many third world countries, such as the UK, whose reputation for being hell on toast is accompanied by a weird belief by immigration officials that people are desperate to live there, it seems that Gates had to jump through many hoops before they let him in.

According to Gizmodo, after Bill was able to show the Nigerian bureaucrats that he more than ten zeros in his bank account, they realised that he might prove very useful to local industry. Specifically to Dr Clement Okon, who had written to Gates in his best capital letters to help him get some money out of the country. µ

UK not Third World

The UK is not a third world country. Besides most countries have a reciprocatory visa policy which explains why Gates was asked to present documentation before the visa WAS granted him.

It is about the rule of law

Proof of being able to support oneself while in the country as a visiting immigrant is a requirement that is made on everyone visiting Nigeria, the USA, UK and a host of other countries. Why should this requirement be waived because he is Bill Gates. Indeed, because he is Bill Gates, it should be very easy to fulfill this requirement.

The Nigerian embassy should be commended for this and if other organs of the government worked with this level of principle and adherence to regulations, Nigeria would not have the challenges it has had to contend with.

Finally, Nigeria is not known only for scams. Kindly educate yourself and you will find a country of nobel prize winners, rich culture, energetic people and not to mention one of the fastest growing GDPs in the world today. But since you are mud slinging, perhaps we should say america is the headquarters of corporate fraud.

Funny Indeed

This is quite funny, however is there proof that Gates was refused a Visa, or it this just one of the terrible things to be said about Nigeria.

If anyone showed up at the US emabssy in Lagos, Nigeria posing to be Aliko Dangote without any substantiated documents to back him up. The U.S embassy will deny his Visa irrespective of the fact that Aliko Dagote is one Nigeria's industrious citizens with successful companies listed on Lagos stock exchange.

If Bill Gates was denied because he was trying to be a smart ass. Good riddance!

BIll Gates!

Nobody is above the law, Bill Gates or whoever he or she may be must respect Immigration Laws. Nigeria is a GREAT country with diverse people and cultures, lovely place to visit.

Gates refused entry to Nigeria

I fully agree with the Nigerian embassy in US denying him visa without proof that he will not negatively impact on our amenities and resources. For me this simply means the Government is waking up to its duties.

Nigeria is a great country

People need to look beyond negatives, every country has its challenges and i guess making Nigeria seem bad everytime is wrong. I agree with Bala, it is a country filled with good people too who want good things just like every other counry and whatever judgments made by authority must be backed up with reasoning.

so what?

A lowly Nigeria should tremble because Bill Gates asks for a visa. What nonsense?

If the Nigerian government should start reciprocating the kind of contemptous treatment meted by racist consular officers of western countries to Nigerians, it would be a different matter.

But they are too decent to do that, because, they are africans.
