Russians to build 45nm Fab

Billion-dollar joint venture in 300mm wafers

THE RUSSIAN government is make a multi-billion dollar inevetment in a chip fab

The wonga will come from the estimated 150-billion dollar investment fund created by selling oil and natural gas to Euroland and other interested parties.

Putting up a couple of billion for a fab is of no issue to cash-rich Russia, struggling as she is to to keep up in the world of semiconductors.

Fabs in Russia are mostly 180 and 250nm process, way off current industry standards of 90, 65 and 45nm.

A joint venture deal between the Russian givernment and Sitronics, Deal was approved by then Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

The government will have a stake of 49 per cent, while Sitronics will hold 51 per cent.

The project represents a 2.3 billion dollar investment, and how this will be split between government and the company remains to be seen (if ever).

The fab is going to be built to use 65nm and 45nm nodes using 300mm wafers. It is scheduled for construction starting in January of 2008 and, with tooling and sprucing up during 2009, chip production should begin in October of that year. µ

not good

they need better process technology like 21nm or 16nm

Question

Which CPUs are they going to build there?

Is there a Russian X86 CPU company similar to AMD and Intel the factory is going to be TSMC like? (Not a company's own factory)

We will rock the world=)

Heh, there's a lot of projects in our country - why do you think only about general purpose cpu? ;)

Too late Russia

Intel will be heavy into production of their 32nm line by the time Russia fab goes on line. That's a lot of money to dump on a current generation technology.

Panasonic & Intel are already producing 45nm chips although they have yet to hit the desktop market.
