Qualcomm import ban banned

Judge listens to phone manufacturers
A US COURT of Appeals Judge has halted an import ban on mobile phones armed with Qualcomm chips. Judge Haldane Mayer agreed to a request by several mobile phone manufacturers and AT&T's wireless division to stay the ban which the federal government ordered in June.

Some Qualcomm chips were banned in the US after it was decided that the company had violated a patent held by Broadcom on battery power-saving technology.

According to Associated Press, Mayer's decision allows carriers and manufacturers to introduce new phone models later this year.

Only AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Kyocera and Sanyo Fisher will be allowed to ignore the ban. The phone companies argued that since Broadcom only filed its complaint against Qualcomm and the ITC did not have the authority to block imports by other companies.

The move does not lift the ban on Qualcomm, only on the carriers and manufacturers that rely on its chips. More here. µ
