Exploding mobile phone battery kills welder

Spare rib
A MAN IS REPORTED TO have been killed by his mobile phone.

The 22-year-old welder in North-western China died when his phone battery blew up.

The device tore into the man's chest, breaking a rib and forcing it into his heart. He died in hospital.

The Qatar News Agency said the man was working in a hot corner of a factory in Shuangcheng, in Gansu Province on June 19.

The manufacturer of the phone is known to the authorities, if not to us right now*. The firm has been informed and is investigating, according to the local paper Lanzhou Chenbao. µ

* Turns out it was a Motorola phone. A spokesMotorola confirmed his outfit was aware of the incident. "Preliminary evidence suggests it is highly unlikely that a cell phone caused this accident," he told the Chinese state newswire Xinhua.
