A billion cell phones sold in 2006
The SIA said that the average semicondcutor content of a cell phone is around $40 a unit.
While George Scalise, the president of the SIA, didn't say what the average semiconductor content of a PC is, he did say the average price for both desktops and laptops fell by more than nine per cent in 2006, "even as the speed and functionality of these systems was enhanced by more powerful chips".
DRAM sales in January amounted to $3.6 billion in sales - up 72 per cent year on year. Scalise said Vista "may have contributed" to the increase in demand.
What's for sure is that the BOM (bill of materials) on a PC with a version of Vista installed must be well worth a dekko, especially when compared to the BOM on a PC with a version of Linux installed.
