Sun claims Opteron sales outpace Itanium

Claims breakthrough on server sales
SEQUENTIAL server revenue at Sun Microsystems has grown faster than the overall market, the firm claimed today.

Citing a Gartner Dataquest report, Sun claimed that in the second calendar quarter of this year, the firm outperformed its competitors in revenue market share growth quarter to quarter.

Those competitors, claimed Sun, include all OSes, Unix and Linux, and Unix.

It said that it grew its market share by strong demand for Solaris servers using Opterons and UltraSPARC IV, as well as Netra 240/440 systems.

It said: "Opteron and UltraSPARC processor shipments and revenue both increased quarter on quarter and year on year, while Itanium server shipments declined quarter on quarter".

We're sure its competitors have a slightly different view to Sun's bullish statements. µ
