Sandisk's 256MB+wi-fi card is a little cutie

Description: SD card with memory and wi-fi capability
I'VE BEEN USING an Ipaq 1940 for a month or two now, foregoing my usual notes on the back of a business card to try and get myself organised.
And as that baby has a slot for an SD card on the top and I'm always looking for wi-fi zones in central London, getting an SD card with memory and a wireless card added is a real bonus.
Although wi-fi zones in central London are still incredibly pricey and make you dash for an Internet caff rather than buy an overpriced cup of foamy coffee and a £6 an hour connection charge, more often than not.
The card is a recent
introduction - Sandisk already makes a wi-fi SD unit without the memory, but if you can cram memory and wireless onto
the same piece of silicon, why the heck not?
The little CD which comes with dinky little card - which will fit in your wallet - comes with software for Pocket PC 2002, Pocket PC 2003, and Windows Mobile 2003.
As with other Pocket PC software, you install this onto your machine and in the case of the 1940 hook up the USB connector and off you go.
After you've done a reset, and if there's a wi-fi connection around, a little mast appears at the bottom of your Pocket PC device's screen, the green LED on the card stops winking and gazes at you steadily, and then you're in business.
This means - in the case of INQ Central at least - that you can browse the special Pocket PC version of the Inquirer.Net, and also check out what's happening elsewhere too.
The 256MB+Wi-Fi unit protrudes out of the top of your iPaq by just over half an inch, so generally speaking you'd probably be wise to remove the card when it's not in use.
This is a neat little gizmo and come that glorious day when people will realise they can provide wi-fi as a service without necessarily having to charge you an arm and a leg to use it, a little device like this could really come into its own.
In the meantime, the INQ wireless LAN is free for INQ LAN wireless users, and it's a real bonus to be able to smurf the web wherever you are, in the back garden or wherever. That extra 256MB of memory is a real boon too. µ
