Korean giant will 'kill its rivals'

SAMSUNG SAYS it will win any chip war by bumping off opponents with cold, hard cash.

A high-ranking official at Samsung told The Korean Times yesterday that, while the rest of the global chip market was gloomy, his company would maintain its dominance by killing its rivals with cash.

He proudly said that Samsung will invest some 10 trillion Korean Won solely for the semiconductor business in 2008.

Samsung does not know who this unidentified official was because the bloke wandered off claiming he was not authorised to talk to the media.

However the comments come a few days after Chu Woo-sik, head of Samsung Electronics’ investor relations team, told hacks that Samsung will plough seven trillion Won in semiconductors.

The belief at Samsung is that the industry’s estimated average bit growth of 55 per cent for DRAM chips and 135 per cent for NAND chips is a bit conservative.

Samsung is the only outfit to post a profit in chip business in the first quarter among its rivals, despite losing its CEO in a corruption scandal.

The Times’ very own Deep Throat claimed that the consolidation in the global memory chip industry was heating up and Samsung is the best-placed contributor to accelerate the move. µ
