Analysts ready for battle

ANALYSTS, bean counters and other beard strokers claim that when AMD releases shedloads of products this month, it will spark another chip war.

The AMD Barcelona-based processors are expected to hit the shops in a couple of weeks and a 65-watt quad-core desktop chip and a triple-core desktop chip are also expected.

This has lead the analysts to believe that there will suddenly be some competition in a market that has been dominated by Chipzilla.

Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat said it was good to see AMD back in the game. But he added that the outfit will have problems in an all out war as it still had not recovered from the last one.

He pointed out that Intel plans to start shipping a six-core processor, called Dunnington, to resellers in the second half of this year using 45nm technology.
Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at research firm Insight 64 told ComputerWorld that competition and innovation would be even greater if both companies were firing on all cylinders again.

But Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group said for AMD to truly be firing on all cylinders again, it had to get a few more products out the door. µ
