AS THE DUST SETTLES on the Blu-ray HD DVD battleground, triumphant Sony has announced that the next batch of DVD-on-steroids players to hit the shelves will feature profile 2.0 support.
This will mean that, given a suitable broadband connection, your hi-def DVDs will phone home and download additional content from the internet.
Early indications are that downloadable extras will include additional scenes, commentaries, alternative endings, language tracks, ringtones editor's cuts and the like.
There are also disturbing rumours that real-time chat will be introduced, which is OK by this haq as long as I'm aloud to real-time shush.
And we're sure it won't be long before you'll be watching a crappy Handycam version of yet-to-be released films, complete with the sound of Russians coughing and munching popcorn.
Sony has announced two upcoming Blu-ray machines with Profile 2.0 support: the BDP-S350, available this summer for $399, which can be updated to the latest profile over the Internet when it's available; and the BDP-S550 ($499), which will ship with Profile 2.0 in the autumn. A forthcoming PS3 update will also add BD live functionality which, in addition to the aforementioned bobbins, will allow you to copy a scaled-down version of your disks to PSP. µ
