Vista SP1 benefits remain a mystery

I'D LIKE TO BRING Inq Readers up to date on how Vista SP1 is settling down here at Spinola Towers.

I'd like to, but I can't.

Being an adventurous sort of chap, I naturally installed Vista SP1 release candidate (RC1) back in December. Seemed to run fine.

When the final version of the service pack was released yesterday, I naturally kicked off Windows Update to install the shiny new version.

Several attempts later, it was still telling me that there were no updates available. Aha, I thought. It obviously thinks I've already got SP1 installed, even though it's an old version, I'd better uninstall it.

Three very lengthy attempts later, I'm still lumbered with the old RC1 version as it (eventually) tells me it has done 100 per cent of all three uninstall phases, then falls on its arse and spends the next 20 minutes undoing the uninstall and bringing me back to square one.

I await Microsoft's reply to my bug report with interest. µ
