Business or bust

APPLE TOLD some chums from the press yesterday that it would be going after Blackberry by making the Iphone into more of a business gadget.

Apple will use Microsoft Exchange for managing contacts, email and calendaring and the like, the firm said.

And, having bricked and squealed at folk who fiddled with their Iphones, the plastic toy maker has now unveiled software development kits and the like to allow third parties to stick stuff on the gadget.

The big idea, according to the Wall Street Journal is to make the Iphone platform a sort of Windows for phones. To this end, Apple has lined up a deep-pocketed venture capital firm to help set up a $100 million fighting fund known as the iFund, apparently.

One VC at Apple's new mate Kleiner Perkins reckoned the deal is a really big one. "It's bigger than the personal computer," he burbled.

Funny how you can be worth a few million and still not have a clue. µ
