Linux gOS 2.0 to be unsheathed Monday

Should've called it Google Linux
Friday, 4 January 2008, 13:04

UPSTART LINUX distribution Good OS will release gOS version 2.0, nicknamed Rocket, at CES in Las Vegas on Monday, January 7th.

The Ubuntu 7.1 based gOS version 1.0 seemingly came out of nowhere to quickly gain popularity on the back of its preload on the Everex Green PC TC2502 sold at discount mega-chain Wal-mart stores for only $199 without monitor.

The gOS system differs from most mainstream Linux distributions by using the lightweight Enlightenment desktop manager instead of Gnome or KDE. It also incorporates a Google toolbar into the desktop to tightly integrate Google's web based email, office and other applications. The gOS system also comes with the Firefox web browser and the Openoffice suite of local productivity applications.

Rocket introduces Google Gears, Google's online-offline synchronisation toolset, as well as Google's Gbooth, a browser based web-cam designed to work with the social network Facebook. An Ezonics Gcam web-cam that works with Gbooth will also become available January 7th.

Good OS isn't owned by or formally affiliated with Google, but they should have called it Google Linux anyway, we reckon.

There's more here. µ

Wrong name

After reading the article I am convinced the should have named it "The Ugooglizer Super soarawary tiny OS" gOS just doesn't sound like anything except a substance that may very well resemble play dough.

Umm

Lightweight and Enlightenment in the same sentence? That's the best laugh I've had all day!

Ubuntu 7.10

The version of Ubuntu is "7.10", not "7.1". The 10 represents the month of October.

FUD. Enlightenment IS lightweight

JGurtz, I don't know what planet you are on, but enlightenment is lightweight. It is so lightweight it works on almost anything.

Screw Microsoft

I've recently switched to my first Linux laptop. Once Linux becomes popular enough to gain critical mass Windows is toast. M$'s steaming pile of crap which is otheriwse known as Vista will be remembered as the mistake that killed the biggest software company the world has ever known. All the new DRM crap finally pissed me off enough to learn a new OS. Now I just have to dump the hotmail account I've had for a million years.

Enlightenment

E17 is super-lightweight. It was as fast or faster on my 500 MHz dual Celerons w/ 384MB RAM than KDE or Gnome on my 2.8 GHz P4 w/ 512MB RAM at work. The last update I ran was even so lightweight that you were done with the file browser as soon as you opened it. I'll give them props for making a fast system, but unfortunately it won't be ready for prime-time until after Duke Nukem' Forever. Still on Hotmail? You'll love gmail!
