SEAGATE hard-drives, made in Thailand, are having trojan horse software pre-loaded, possibly in a spy effort by the Chinese government.
The Taiwanese Investigation Bureau claims that the Maxtor Basics 500G discs, which are used by government agencies, have been found to contain Trojan horse viruses that automatically upload to Beijing websites.
So far more than 1,800 of the portable Maxtor hard discs, carried two Trojan horse viruses: autorun.inf and ghost.pif.
The sites that the hard-drives call up and upload their data to are www.nice8.org and www.we168.org.
The attack is unusual, which leads the TIB to think that the Chinese government is involved.
Recently, the Chinese government has run an aggressive interweb spying programme in Taiwan.
The bureau has ordered the product's Taiwanese distributor, Xander International, to take the hard-drives from the shelves.
Xander told the Chinese-language Liberty Times that the company had sold 1,800 tainted discs to stores last month.
Seagate's Asian Pacific branch said it was investigating.

That it's come down to a factory issue might be news. I take it for granted that hdd's with pre-installed OS's and software have nasty things lurking that allow them to phone home willy nilly. Some might call that XP or Vista... Every new hdd that passes through my hands gets a complete format and a sector scan before software one is loaded for a client or myself. If Johnny Lunchbox wants his BestBuy Media Center P.O.S., all set up and ready to go, there's not much cause in whining about everything that could (and will) go wrong sooner or later, including mysterious network traffic which (he) perceives as rather odd things happening while playing Solitaire. Numb to the nuts these people be, and eminently deserving of all bad things.
Gotta love Windows! Insecure by design. Who else would make a system that would automatically run something without asking from a disk that you inserted/installed without asking?
Don't most all businesses and governments disable autorun? and if not, ARE THEY INSANE? But of course propaganda must have its way, next week it's Putin's turn again right? where we blame him for something random. Or is it iran? or how about we make something up where china on behest of putin installs spyware for iran? Stay tuned.
