What's the definition of a heatsink for a hot journalist? Answer: the local boozer
IN A THREAD on Apple's discussion forum, software developers who use Macs are up in arms because Capuccinno Steve's flash new Leopard OS chokes on Sun's latest Java 1.6.
Apparently Apple's OS/X 10.5 ships without an updated Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that can handle Java 1.6. Reportedly Java 1.6 crashes with a segmentation fault while trying to load on Leopard. Apple hasn't commented officially but is said to be deleting forum complaints.
Some Mac based developers have been quick to blame Sun, but Sun's Java visionary James Gosling has disclaimed responsibility, saying that Apple develops its own JVM for OS/X "because Apple wanted to do it. "
Gosling wrote that Apple "wanted to do all sorts of customization and integration that only they could do -- because they own the OS." He also said that its lag on JDK support for Java 1.6 "keeps feeling like the big problem is that developers aren't the 'Target Demographic'." µ

This is NOT a fault.... the makers of the Jeeeezuz phone can make no mistakes! (their will be done) This is just another product feature: to chastize those who dare using such subversive software as JAVA. Since I am a non-professional wine-maitre, i can testify that they are right: coffee and apples just don't match.
Apple will certainly get a free pass like they always do. However, with that aside, WTF? Java 1.6 has been out for how long? People should be outraged and this WILL be a showstopper for anyone considering Leopard. Bad Cappucino.
Once again, Apple tries to push yet another software suite off their platform?
They explicitly say 1.6, therefore I assume java 1.5 works fine. Luckily, I never bother upgrading anything until I'm actually forced to. ;)
It's Leoptard.
Apple trying to muscle off any other company off their platform? How very iFascist of them. What next? An eBook burning of anything not purchased thru iToons?
Comment to captain, not upgrading unless you are forced to? how do you enjoy that Apple II? if you 'never" upgraded unless you needed to, than you can drum up a word document, surf the net and make a professional looking report in about the same time or less on one of those feature filled beauties of the 80's! On a side note, If I get the latest OS for my new computer, I expect to be able to run the latest programs and hardware. It is my largest complaint against Creative Labs right now, that their drivers for my New OS with their latest sound card are, well, piss poor. I am not understanding Apple at the moment with the alienating going on. From dumping Java support on the Iphone to not just dumping it, but causing it to Crash the almighty Leopard? Whats next? not allowing me to run an OPERATING SYSTEM just because I built my computer with my own two hands, even though the internals are the SAME? oh wait, they do that already, my mistake. Sorry, but you can have the most awesome OS on the market that will do anything and everything and never crash, but I wont run it if they wont allow me something as simple as permission to run it on MY system (and btw, let me know when that OS shows up, kuz it aint here yet!).
What is ironic is that plenty of Java developers are Mac users!. Take CrushFTP or Java IE for instance!, both Mac-developed desktop Java apps. Way to go Steve! annoy the Java developers who BUY YOUR PRODUCTS!. I thought Steve and McNealy were good friends? http://www.javacoffeebreak.com/articles/javaone00/jobs.jpg
I get a kick out of reading Apple forums. It's funny how the fanboys and fangirls rip into anyone who brings up any issue where blame could lie with their precious PC marketers (I mean system builders/assemblers). They defend their "faith" and worship their "holy leader" without questions or doubt. At least it's computers in California and not koolaid in South America, right? Still, I'm perfectly happy viewing myself as the creative entity and my computer as an inantimate object and simply a tool.
Ha Ha, silly Apple always screwing the consumer.. I mean Microsoft, pardon me... no wait, I'm sure its Apple now... hmm... ? Oh well, Silly Applesoft.
...But here's why. Stevo doesn't care much for menu-driven OSes and applications these days -- it's just so Nineties. My guess is that he's concentrating on a new portable computer that's entirely touchscreen -- super-slim, no physical keyboard or mouse, iPhone-like navigation and a battery that gives 8 hours of use without recharging. That's a lot to think about but he's demanded it, and got it, before. The only thing I can't predict is the physical form factor, other than that it will be bigger than an iPod and no bigger than a typical ultra-portable and the screen will take up the entire front side, give or take an off button. Leopard isn't as horrible as Vista but it clearly lacks the hand of God that's evident in portable device like the iPhone and iTouch. Jobs has left the building. Watch this space.
