Two free games based on the Quake 3 engine tip up

Fiddle and tweak
Tuesday, 3 April 2007, 16:13
QUAKE 3 JUST refuses to die. The game was released back in December of 1999 and, with the release of complete source code under the GPL (General Public Licence) in August of 2005, the mod community went berserk.

Now, as a result of this move, two totally free games have been released in the past couple of hours - UrbanTerror and World of Padman.

All of this was possible thanks to improvements to the engine which were brought about by the ioquake3 project. The number of improvements is mind boggling. The authors added OpenAL for sound instead of the original 96-track, stereo spatialised two-channel output. Support for OpenAL also brought surround sound, to make things more incredible. The game engine now also supports Ogg Vorbis format and video capture of demos in .avi format.

great role-model.

Some serious action is always welcome...

UrbanTerror is a run-about in the vein of Counter strike. Compared with more recent offerings the visual limitations of the Quake 3 engine may seem dated, but this free game will offer you hours of entertainment.

padworld
...but nothing beats the sheer fun that Padman offers

World of Padman Standalone Complex is a cartoony action game which brings less-violent weapons of mass paintstruction - this is a war of colours.

As an old friend from Slovakia once said: "God Bless St. John Carmack, who made fortune on games about Hell." µ
