Mainframe game
CHIP FIRM Advanced Micro Devices said that Vmware ESX Server is now ready to go on Opteron systems made by HP and IBM.

Vmware has qualified the four way Proliant DL585 and the IBM E325 for its ESX server product.

What is server virtualisation, you may ask. AMD explains that Vmware provides software that allows support for concurrent 32-bit and 64-bit "virtual machines" on 64 bit architectures.

The general manager of AMD's CPU unit said that features built into its future dual core and single core chips will allow mainframe quality virtualisation using the Opteron "brains".

Meanwhile, AMD said that it will introduce a design support services programme at Linuxworld today. The subscription service will give access to reference designs, and step by step support.
