You seem to be confusing two things, QR codes, which are all free and usable by individuals in ways they choose, and these 'shotcodes' which seem to be a gimmick based on the concept to milk money from people that seem to have too much of the stuff.
But at least you got your barmoney heh.

The N95 has a built in reader which works very well, so about 2 seconds after discovering that, I discovered the program to generate them.
